Another loss Thursday night for the Mariners at Safeco Field began the way so many other contests have this season. Ichiro reached base on his 176th single of the season and the 1,800th hit of his career. The significance was hard to miss, given how it came the same day The Seattle Times quoted a Mariners clubhouse insider saying animosity from some teammates was so great he feared Ichiro would be attacked. Both manager Jim Riggleman and closer J.J. Putz said before the team's 6-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels that they could not recall any specific incidents of threats against Ichiro or team meetings because of it. The clubhouse insider had indicated that a meeting was held to discuss grumbling about Ichiro earlier this season, as well as in May 2007. The source did not indicate whether Ichiro's name was specifically brought up in front of the team, or whether the issue of internal bickering was dealt with in more general terms. He did say that former manager John McLaren and his staff were forced to act this season after a player was overheard talking about Ichiro and wanting to "knock him out."

Yeah, I can see how Ichiro would piss you off. A quiet, unassuming, barely English-speaking guy who gets on base all the time. What a dlck.

Whoever said that better come with a bat. I'm sure Ichiro knows kung fu.

A Mariners player playing up to his big contract? Yeah, I can imagine that drawing some scorn from the rest of his meathead, roid-during-your-contract year teammates.

Mr.Single..........He always be a selffish player. Even in Japan......If you don`t believe it, well.......If this guy would hit more then a single maybe the team would be doing a little better. Then again even in japan here that was his trade mark. Oh yes he would steal a few bases....Outrun the out fielder throw etc. But he not getting any younger. His name alone is worth all the problems the ads, the Japanese indorsments, etc etc etc.........

For once, and probably ONLY once, I will agree wholeheartedly. People want to applaud his quiet demeanor and how he reaches base all the time. Great. However, he also has a reputation dating back to days in Japania of being a candyassed primadona. Let's start with how he insists on having "Ichiro" on his jersey instead of using his LAST name like 99.9% of every other player in baseball. He never gets called out for not running to first hard when he grounds out.

"a player was overheard talking about Ichiro and wanting to "knock him out."

Sounds like the Mariners all season...they want to hit something but they can't!

September 26, 2008  08:56 AM ET

You have got to be kidding me. I guess prosperity breeds jealousy. When you are a leadoff guy your job is to get on, whether it's a walk, single. You don't need to hit homeruns. What an idiotic comment....he may have some quirks but doesnt everybody. Leave the guys alone.......

"He never gets called out for not running to first hard when he grounds out. "yea but then again even see trying to do more he wanted to do doing any given situation....Oh he steal a base, run in to the fence and try to catch a ball, etc etc.....But Even from people that lived in Kobe said he was as selfishor even more so know then ever before. His iamge alone is worth the head banging thing doesnt do. ...........Just a example...........on NHK here in Japan they show every japanese players that is playing for a MLB team in the USA. You would see SEATTLE team playing on NHK before you would see any other team ( even if a japanese player is on a first place team fighting for a div title game). Now I seen NHK do this crap on a daily bases. Who inthe world want to seee Seattle play Clev? When you have other games that are more important then watching Seattle play Clev? Its all about his iamge and the ad monies that they get from Japanese Companies to Seattle for their back stop ads behind the plate, etc etc etc.....

Yep, I was right, that will be the ONLY time we agree. Grossed out has gone off on some cockamamy tangent that the TRUTH wants no part of. Time to circle back, EEECHIRO is a selfish prick folks. Don't be a selfish prick kids!

Hey Truth.........is the Tribe gonna be able to get the job done this weekend?

September 26, 2008  09:16 AM ET

Ummm, let me see. A player, who usually the leadoff on his team ACTUALLY does his job and gets on base draws the ire of some of the players on his team. You know, if these "players" actually put forth the same amount on energy into their play that they do into hating their leadoff man, then perhaps they would be 101-58 instead of 58-101.

Jordan was considered selfish at many times in his career, Ricky Henderson was considered selfish many times in his career, as have countless other players. No excuse for not performing so as to help your team win more than 58 games in a season. It is bushleague crap, and its the reason why this team is in last place, and a team like the Angels are way on the opposite end of the spectrum in the AL west.

Pathetic....

Man do I hate this blame someone else culture.

Um.... selfish... Does Grossedout9 nine know what selfish is?....let me see "Oh yes he would steal a few bases....Outrun the out fielder throw etc." aren't those qualities of a good ball player? Now, if the guy was "injured" all the time, wouldn't participate in drills, work on his hitting, always swinging for home runs.... you get the picture.

Face it, the rest of the team stinks. Maybe "those players" should look at themselves first.
Those players are trying to save their own skin. Talk about selfish.

lol....
a leadoff hitter getting singles is bad baseball ?
wow never realized that.

Maybe if you look at the POORLY CONSTRUCTED team around him.
guys that hit 3,4,5 that strike out 500 times- that's not part of it?

There is a reason the GM was fired- it was ALL his fault for putting
together that mis-mashed squad.

people never 'hated' Boggs or Gwynn for hitting singles-
