Milan has released a statement in which it categorically denies signing nine-year-old wonderkid Edgardo Obregon. It was widely reported yesterday that the Italian club had already snapped up the nine-year-old Obregon. The Mexican has already played for Chivas de Guardalajara and Barcelona, and impressed the Rossoneri recently during trials at Milanello and Il Diavolo. Obregon has already been compared to the likes of Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero, but Milan have come out and rubbished the reports that they have signed the minor.

Crazy that we've reached a point where there are even rumors of signing such young kids. If Christiano Ronaldo were to impregnate Marta, some club might bid on the child in utero.

LOL on the Ronaldo referrence.

This is stupid. You cannot possibly evaluate the POTENTIAL talent of a 9 year old. What's next? Signing the offspring of great players before they are even born. Hey I heard that Leo Messi might have a kid in the next 10 years and that he will probably be a great player. Lets tell the world that we have a contract written up for his unborn son.

You know what, on a serious note if basketball coaches can offer scholarship offers to kids in junior high school (here's looking at you Billy Gillespie) then we shouldn't be so surprised that it's happening in football.

This kid is going to be part of Milan's youth academy where they can develop him to hopefully play in the next 10 years or so. All the major clubs invest in youth, so I'm not surprised by this.

I was thinking the same thing. The thing that's happened with basketball is that it tends to have the opposite effect. For every Lebron James and Kevin Garnett there's 20 Kwame Browns (although I wouldn't call making $20 mil a year failing).

that 9 year old is going to be a hit with the girls at the junior prom dance...

Didn't an Italian club offer a contract to F. Adu when he was about that age? Though his mother turned it down.

If Ronaldo were to impregnate Marta, it would be the first known case of transgender reproduction in medical history...

He's a little long in the tooth at 9 for Arsene Wenger's liking lol But if Aguerro and Maradonna's daughter's offspring turns out to be a boy, every coach will be all over him before he can walk.

I agree with J and Pawn, i think a level of interest is important and can definitely yield results but 9 is a bit too young, my little girl is 8 and I can't imagine putting any kind of pressure at that age, it's absurd. However i do think it's very important to continue to develop talent when there definitely is talent there, look at Gio, Bojan and Messi in the Barca youth system. But cut these kids at 9 a break they are just that...KIDS.

Wasn't there another Mexican kid that Madrid had a huge interest in, he may have been between 12-14 though, still young but more realistic IMO.

I don't know if hockey translates to soccer......at 9 years of age everyone knew Gretzky, Lemieux, & Crosby would be great.

Who cares how good he is! He's a CHILD!!!

if it's even true.....

September 26, 2008  11:36 PM ET

guess he can tell his mom to sod off, everytime she nags him about doing homework...

This is the point where a kid stops being a kid. If he is signed, he will have no life other than soccer. The team will dictate his every breath.
In a reference to hockey, when Eric Lindros was first signed by the Flyers, his contract stated that he was no longer allowed to water ski at his cottage (which he loved to do).
Let the kid be a kid for a while. Maybe it will turn out that he doesn't even like the game when he gets a little older.

For Ronaldo's sake, I hope he does not get close to Marta. She doesn't look like the kind of girl to like Ronaldo's attention.

Nothing wrong with this.

Sincerely,
Tony Alamo

Let the kid have fun and be a kid
