Rivera may be headed for surgery

New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera is considering whether to have offseason surgery on his sore right shoulder. General manager Brian Cashman said before Friday night's scheduled game against the Boston Red Sox that Rivera can pitch through the pain until the season's over. But over the winter, Rivera will need treatment or surgery for calcification of the A.C. joint on the top of his shoulder. "This isn't something that is a serious shoulder injury,'' manager Joe Girardi said. "It wasn't affecting his stuff. It wasn't affecting his ability to get people out.''

If he is injured now why is he still pitching since the Yankees are out of the playoffs? Another example on how stupid some players are about there health.

No kidding.

He isn't injured, he has a nagging shoulder problem that can be corrected with minor surgery. It isn't an "injury" per say.

Additionally, he wants to keep pitching so that he is available on Sunday to try and get Mike Mussina his 20th win. Moose has never had a 20 win season (he's had three 19 win and a bunch of 18 win seasons).

I just had the "knife" to my right shoulder yesterday. I HAD a severly torn rotator cuff, three torn tendons and a torn labrum. Believe it or not it was outpatient surgery ( in at 6:30 AM home at 1:00PM) - thank you health insurance( lucky to have something though ). It has been one painful day today but at least it's done - "rehab here I come" !!!

Best closer in the game. Best closer this year. I'm an alley cat, so I don't wear a cap, but if I did, it would be off to Mr. Rivera.

Also, F the Yankees!

Us yankees fans have known all along just how cool, calm and in control this guy is, even after he has a bad outing, shakes it off and comes out and goes back to work. He very rarely exhibits emotion. Has one pitch that moves in and moves out, under his control, and complete command of the strike zone. Very smooth delivery to the plate, where ball gets on the hitter very quickly, with seemingly no effort. The movement of his cutter varies, but when really moving is very difficult to hit. It is now no suprise to the league, but because of that cutter, this right hander is actually tougher on lefty's than on righty's. He was breaking bats long before there was a 'maple' bat breaking problem. That is because, it is difficult to get the meat of the bat or the sweet spot if you will, on the ball. This is becasue many times it's off the end of the bat or in on the handle. It doesn't appear that this latest physical issue is a major one. But he certainly does not need to pitch in the up coming double header this sunday. It's easy to see, as a yankee fan or not, this guy has earned the respect as one of the greatest closers in the game today.
