Three teams lining up for Lowe?

If you read between the lines, you could swear Derek Lowe doesn't believe he will be back with the Dodgers. In fact, when asked about a possible return to the Red Sox, he answered, "I loved playing for the Red Sox. Any player would love to play for an organization like that. I always wanted to stay there." Lowe will be in demand. The Tigers could be a possibility (he is from Dearborn, Mich.), though they weren't interested when he was a free agent before. They are looking to retool, however, and the rubber-armed Lowe could be a good fit. Both New York teams are likely to be in the market for him, especially if CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett don't wind up there. Lowe said he has no preference between the American and National Leagues. If he returned to Boston, he could mentor Justin Masterson, a pitcher often compared to him.

Ha... Tigers fo sho.

I'd like to see the Cardinals pursue him.

I personally wouldnt mind seeing Lowe back with the red sox, remember schilling is done so we need a starting pitcher. Besides he did very well in Boston helping us win the 04 series

Same here.

Red Sox have Beckett, Matsuzaka, Lester, Wakefield and Masterson, as well as possibly re-signing Byrd. I don't see them signing Lowe; he's older, been in a weak division, and is probably looking for more than the Sox are willing to pay.

I can see the Cards getting him, they grabbed Pineiro and got some use out of him, I'm sure he could win 15+ games in St. Louis.

Lowe seems like Dave Duncan's kind of pitcher

September 28, 2008  05:49 PM ET

It depends on how many years he wants. He's on the wrong side of 35 now.

September 28, 2008  07:36 PM ET

Overall Lowe's career with the Red Sox was pretty eratic, but give him props for his performance during playoffs in '04. But if he'd been that dependable all season and before they'd have held onto him. Glad he did well in Dodgertown, he should stay there.

As for Wakefield, even knuckleballers get old. Sorry to say because I like him, but I think his end is near. Timlin's old, Byrd is getting their. If we're lucky, Buckholtz will have gotten rid of the heebeegeebees by next year and is ready to be a major leaguer

Red Sox were never keeping Lowe even if he played well in 04?

Anyone follow this team before they won the world series.

Count me in as another person that says BRING BACK LOWE.

This guy could help about 30 teams in baseball. He is the consummate professional pitcher, and is valuable in many roles. He's not great, but I'd want him on my team.

September 28, 2008  10:52 PM ET

Come to the D! We are getting new pitching coaches next year!

Agreed, CF2. I wouldn't give him a long term deal

Actually, if you followed them before they won the WS, you would know that even though he had some success and failures in Boston, he was positively terrible as a SP in 2004 and was sent to the bullpen for the '04 playoffs. Everyone appreciates that he came up big when plugged in to spots in those playoffs, but the fact is both his awful reg season and off the field exploits with drinking and cheating on the wife, made him get a one way ticket out of town. They didnt even offer him a contract after winning all 3 clinching games in the '04 postseason. There is ZERO chance he comes back, and really, he should stay away from the AL anyway. LA or St Louis is perfect for him. Love ya, DLowe, but no return engagements in Beantown.

Given the fact Schilling didn't throw a single pitch in 2008, I'm not sure why his retirement would cause the Sox to need another pitcher.

September 29, 2008  02:45 AM ET

Nice to hear a former Red Sox player say he liked playing here and wants to return...refreshing for a change.

September 29, 2008  07:46 AM ET

The Tigers could use ANY pitcher that is not dead.

September 29, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Derek has been the most consistent pitcher on the Dodgers staff this season. Unfortunately, the run support he received sucked. The Dodgers should keep him.

Bring him back to Boston!!!!!!!!!!!!!
