Irish deal with kicking woes

Notre Dame's field-goal-kicking woes continued in the first quarter when Brandon Walker missed a 31-yarder. That made Walker 0-for-4 on the season and 6-for-16 dating to last season, including 1-for-11 from 30 yards and beyond. That's what made what happened late in the fourth quarter so potentially significant. The Irish offense stalled at the 23, and coach Charlie Weis sent Walker into the game to attempt a 41-yarder -- but not before giving him some advice. ''I didn't talk to him after the miss,'' Weis said. ''But after he made a couple extra points, I just walked over to him and said, 'Look, you're going to have to make a kick in this game. It's just like the extra point. We've seen you kick balls 50 yards in practice. Just believe you're kicking the extra point, and let's go.''' Walker's first made field goal of the season also had a practical purpose because it put Notre Dame up by three scores. ''It boosted my confidence, the coaches' confidence and the players' confidence in me, so it was a relief,'' Walker said.

Might I suggest a remedial english class Janus...?

No I think that you should try making new excuses as to why you haven't won a bowl game since 1992.

September 28, 2008  12:54 PM ET

That Pointsetta Bowl in 2010 looks pretty promising though.

With everything that happened in college football this weekend, why is this even a story? Yes the kicking game sucks but I'm sure other teams have their problems. Is this the best that TNR can come up with, or does there always have to be a ND story here?

September 28, 2008  01:30 PM ET

Mr. Miyagi Jr - T&R needs ND. Because the story will get 70 to 80 or more comments, no matter what the headline is.

ND had a great 3rd quarter to put Prudue away. Allen is starting to find his game. The O line is getting after the D line. Keep it going next week!!

GO IRISH!

I think the next game is going to be better than this Purdue one. Depends on how much time the Irish can control the football though.

The Irish play Stamford next, I'm not sure I understand your comment.

September 28, 2008  01:50 PM ET

Nice work today Janus.

September 28, 2008  01:52 PM ET

Stanford - sorry about that

September 28, 2008  02:22 PM ET

I wouldn't take Stanford lightly.

September 28, 2008  02:37 PM ET

They won their home opener against Oregon St. And we all know what they just did to USC.

September 28, 2008  03:51 PM ET

Are you Kidding? I'm not taking them lightly. They're a much better team then in years past.

Just remember & understand each & every week in college football is different. ND won three games last year, Stanford was one of them. Yet Stanford beat Southern Cal in the same year. You & I both know Oregon St. would lose 9 out of 10 times v's Southern Cal. Same thing with Old Miss & Florida.
Meeeechigannnn is having a down year, but Wisconsin layed an egg cuz they thought uofm would lay down for the 9th ranked team.

September 28, 2008  06:18 PM ET

Go Irish.

September 28, 2008  08:37 PM ET

I just found out how to make ND cookies. You put them in a bowl and beat for 3 hours.

On a side note, could you guys learn the difference between then and than....... loss, lose and loose ...... there, their and they're ....and......your and you're.

Charlie looks happy they announced the mcrib is back.

What a great year already! I love the haters! Does it make you pansies feel better to talk about a ND team that won this week while your sorry teams lost? Rhetorical question, I don't care about your lame programs.

I said I didn't care. Anyhow, I would like to just once come on here and read some intelligent conversation. Instead I read fat jokes every other day and that ND sucks. Duh, he has a weight isue as everybody in the world can see. If you don't like Charlie that's fine, kudos to you, but what I would like to read his what ND needs to work on. Why does ND suck? For example, ND's defense was suppose to be much improved, which it is, but THE D has had problems stuffing the run. Is it the players? Coaches? Both? Please elaborate where I don't have to sink down to stupidity with my comments like above.
