Cashman wants to return to Yankees

While Brian Cashman remained mum about his future, the buzz smothering the Yankees' universe yesterday focused on the GM telling the Steinbrenner family he wants to return. An announcement could come as soon as tomorrow. "Sooner than later," Cashman said with a smile when asked about reaching a decision. Hal Steinbrenner, who wants Cashman back, hasn't made an offer. However, there are indications Cashman could tell Steinbrenner he wants to return and negotiate later. With Hank Steinbrenner fading from the picture, Hal has been in touch with Cashman more than his older brother. Cashman and Hal work very well together and Hank hasn't been involved in meetings with Hal and Cashman and his involvement has decreased.

Pfft... Who wouldn't? What a cush job. All you gotta do lick the Brothers' Stienbrenner's butt-holes.

What do they mean by "Hank fading from the picture". Hal runs the team and Hank runs his mouth. It's been that way for some time.

He's the most over-rated GM in baseball. 200 million every year and his team is fading. They're going to bump it up to 300 mil next year. I'm sure he'll sign Sabathia, Burnett, Manny and Teixeira. He's the CASHman!

He had a 90 win team this year under very difficult circumstances, but could have made some brighter acquisitions than he did. He's gonna need to show some better chops next year.

What is your point ?

lets say they DO go up to 300 mil....is he breaking any rules?
whatever team you root for > wouldn't you want your owner
to pony up AS MUCH $ that they can?
- just becaue you are jealous- don't fault the man
and what GIGANTIC free agent have they acquired
over the last 2-3 years? NONE- they only re-signed arod

I personally think it is his time to go - due to his lack of
picking up quality pitching.... and how exactly are they fading ?
they were beaten out by a Tampa team that had a remarkable
year....its not like they were below 500

One of the easiest jobs in sports, my friends. You have the biggest payroll in professional sports. Anyone with any knowledge of baseball could do a passable job. Thus, Cashman.

September 28, 2008  10:37 PM ET

Of course he wants to return to the Yanks, he can't win with a $200+ million payroll how could he ever win where he would have to have a budget

My point is in the very first line; he's over-rated. That was my point. He's accomplished mediocre results with almost unlimited resources. And try as I may, I just can't be jealous of a team that is going to be loading all their stuff into duffle bags on Monday morning.

September 29, 2008  10:01 AM ET

He has to be a glutton for punishment to want to keep working for "Frick and Frack" aka Hank and Hal.

September 29, 2008  11:48 AM ET

he has put this team together, why not stick it out.. he knows this team can win, should win, injuries this year have taken the wind out of the sails of the yankee's.. he will fix what needs to be fixed and leave the other things. he has already taken the brunt of the blame and has owned up to the mistakes he has made.. i am glad he is sticking around

September 29, 2008  12:36 PM ET

Mediocre results? Three World Series rings (the first of the latest four was not with Cashman at the helm) and a span of 13 consecutive post season appearances (12 under Cashman) is mediocre? Absurd.
