Why Mattingly's miffed at Yankees

Count Don Mattingly among those who weren't pleased that Joe Torre wasn't acknowledged at the pregame ceremony for the closing of Yankee Stadium. "I wasn't there and I don't know how it happened," said Mattingly, "but not to acknowledge Joe . . . I know they said it was an oversight. I heard somebody tell me that they only did it for the guys who played there, but you know what, he's a big part of the history of that franchise and the fans know it. Joe's a class act. I'm sure he's not going to talk about it and he's going to say, 'Oh, I understand,' or whatever. An oversight? Pretty big oversight."

Cut your hair, HIPPIE!!!

September 28, 2008  09:43 AM ET

who are you talking about exactly?

I think someone is mixed up about what thread they're on. Maybe he hasn't had his cup o' joe yet. Yeah, that must be it.

Steinbrenner used to bust Mattingly's chops when his hair or sideburns got a bit "unruly". I think that's what he is referring to. They made fun of it on the Simpsons once.

And Don is correct. That was an oversight it was an atrocity. They showed Miller Huggins, Casey Stengel and Buck Showalter. I wasn't aware they played in NY as well as managed. They also should have included Mickey Rivers as far as players go.
I didn't see them mention Bob Watson who was the GM of the 1996 team either which was another joke. Watson, Stick Michaels and Buck built those championship teams.

I meant is was NOT an oversight

Very classless to not include Torre

I don't know if you ever noticed, but Torre's a real beatnick. He walks around in sandals all the time, too, and rarely showers.

What's going on Atro?
An Italian not showering? There's a news flash. Next you'll say he doesn't wear deodarant.

Morning, Cyder! How goes it? There's even more to it than that. Rumour is that Zimmer is going to out Torre for not washing his mesh muscle shirts in his new book, "Torre is the Pits."

It goes my friend. It would go better if I wasn't working but what can you do.
I hear Torre makes a hell of a home made wine. It tastes like lighter fluid but it's about 90 proof. After the playoffs House and Garden is going to do a photo spread of the room in Torre's house no one is allowed to go in. You know, the one with the burgundy couches covered with plastic.

I think you ARE allowed to go in, you just can't eat in there or sit on anything.

As one who grew up in an Italian family with Italian neighbors I can say definitively those rooms are off limits unless it's Christmas, Easter or Thanksgiving. At one point I thought my Mom was going to put up stancions.

Very similar to my family, only difference being that MY mom would charge admission.

Italians and Jews have a lot in common. Noses, mothers who heap guilt upon you, endless arguments at family functions, expensive cars for the sake of appearances, overblown religious ceremonies, the fondest desire that the kids marry within the group.....

I left out the abundant body hair and penchant for jewelry.

Don Mattingly should really shut up. As for Joe Torre, this guy burned out more relievers - from Paul Quantril, to Ron Villone, to Luis Vizcaino, to Tom "Flash" Gordon, to Ramiro Mendoza to Scott Proctor - than any other manager in the history of baseball. After leaving the Yankees, Joe Torre said he would never return to the Stadium - he has given numerous interviews saying he was glad to be away from the "craziness" in NY. Hey Joe, you loved the "craziness" in NY when you were making all those millions of dollars, right?

I agree with the Yankees' decision not to include any mention of Joe Torre at the last night of the Stadium. I was very happy to see Bernie Williams back because he was screwed over by the Yanks and they are trying to make amends. For that matter, the Yanks did not acknowledge Roger Clemens either.

As for Don Mattingly, he and his wife - who apparently has been arrested a couple of times for drunk driving and/or creating scenes in Indiana - are having a nasty divorce. Mattingly knew this and yet, he applied for the Yankee managerial position. I mean, that job is the toughest in baseball and do you really want that job when you have an out-of-control wife at home???

I am not thrilled with Joe Girardi but his home life is stable.

Considering ARod and Madonna, all the Yankees needed was a manager with a whacked out wife!!!!!!!

Whatever respect I had for Don Mattingly, I lost. The Yankees are not perferct but those potshots from Don Mattingly are hilarious. Don really needs to take care of things at home before he can manage a clubhouse.

He's got a point - Torre's only making two dollars above minimum wage in L.A.

(sigh) would that Noles were here today ...

Donny was asked a question and answered it honestly and he's correct. Not acknowledging Torre was wrong. Torre was rough on bullpens at the end because he had lousy bullpens. His use of the pen in the late 90's was much different and he got quite a bit out of marginal guys liek David Weathers and Graham Lloyd in the playoffs.
