Big changes in San Diego?

Expect some changes in San Diego, where manager Bud Black isn't exactly on great footing. But if Black is back, look for coaching changes. Hitting coach Wally Joyner has already resigned, and there could be more changes. The Padres need to redo their roster. They are in desperate need of a speedy center fielder who can steal bases, which is why Coco Crisp makes so much sense for them. The Padres had attempted only 34 steals through Thursday. They do very little hit-and-running and very rarely make anything happen offensively. That has to change.

ya that team is a bunch of misfits

San Diego went into this season with an outfield of Edmonds, Giles and Hairston. What exactly did management think was going to happen? Yeah, they need a makeover.

Who is this team? It was ten years ago that the Padres met the Yankees in the World Series. The 2008 Friars draw pale comparisons to the '98 line-up. From catcher to right field, the current crop is trying to play over their heads in a ballpark that intimidates them every day. Who are they? I don't think they know themselves. Maybe Theo took the real Padres to Boston with him?

34 stolen base attempts???? that's it??? wow, when your not scoring runs you need to somehow manufacture runs....

They have two young center fielders already with Venable and Gerut. Both have played well.

San Diego has very little production out of its corner outfield spots (and would be wise to let Giles walk away). Greene has underachieved at SS in 2008 (even before the meltdown-related injury--a .260 OBP is intolerable, I don't care if he's Ozzie Smith 'in his prime' incarnate), and is a poor base-runner. Second base is a huge question mark for the Pad's, as is their substandard catching corps. The Padres rotation after Peavy includes a lot of question marks (with high ERA's). The bench in San Diego is filled with defensively adequate players that simply can't hit (with the lone exception of journeyman 5th OF Gerut, who posted his best numbers since 2003 in a more active role). That's a LOT of uncertainty, and that's without the possible retirement of Trevor Hoffman.

To assert that the San Diego Padres are going to make big changes is almost an imperative for that organization, not a subject for debate. With Maddux gone, Giles (hopefully) on his way to a DH gig in a small maket in the A.L. and wastes of salary Prior/Barrett/Estes/Wolf/Rusch/Tomko all coming off of the books, it would take a moron of Pittsburgh GM proportions not to improve this club with the freed up salary. If Sand Diego doesn't open it's wallets a bit and rebuild around a solid core of Peavy, Gonzalez, and Kouzmanoff... they should compete in AAA. They certainly won't compete with a lackluster roster like they presented their fans in 2008. If a 99 loss season isn't a wake-up call for a drastic shake-up, I don't know what is!
