Dempsey may leave Fulham

Red hot for the US national team, Clint Dempsey can get a game for Fulham, despite the club's less than impressive start to the season. Now he has spoken out, hinting that a departure from Craven Cottage might be his only recourse if manager Roy Hodgson is not going to play him. The summer arrival of Zoltan Gera, plus Roy Hodgson's appointment as manager last term, has seen the US international confined to the bench more often than not, and indeed he has started just one match -- the Carling Cup defeat to Burnley -- thus far.

benching dempsey is terrible for him. its when he is self concsious and doubting about his play that he plays the worse. when clint is confident he is a fantastic player. keeping a regular playing schedule really seems to effect him positively.

September 28, 2008  12:48 PM ET

Well if he's not in their plans they might as well find a taker for him in January. I think Clint can play, and should be able to play for Fulham but if Hogson doesn't want him, then move him.

September 28, 2008  12:57 PM ET

dempsey's confidence is not at stake, as he's clearly succeeding in Quals... if he doesnt get more PT he needs to venture out into other waters... there are other teams that are more suited for his play, perhaps in the netherlands or in portugal or spain.... i think playing for Fulham has actually decreased his talent, rather then controlling and putting forth fantastic moves, he's been reduced to a physical checking back player who passes the ball off... when he has the ball at his feet and can attack forward is when he's most dangerous.... checking and back passing is not it

leave dempsey leave

it must suck being a bench player...
alittle better than waterboy, but not much:((((

September 28, 2008  02:40 PM ET

if u dont mind dudes, hate to self proclaim...
am having a throwdown regarding arsenal, vote either way if interested
danke

September 28, 2008  04:32 PM ET

clint needs to leave. Hodgson clearly doesnt want him to play, which is just shows his stupidity. clint should leave. elsewhere in the epl, portugal, spian anywhere. just get some quality pt

September 28, 2008  06:07 PM ET

dempsey is the best player on the team.

September 28, 2008  06:42 PM ET

A lot of American field players are having trouble seeing PT. One wonders why Dempsey signed an extension to stay with this club.
I honestly believe most of the coaches who have yanks on their squads are prejudiced towards them. Sure most of the coaches came after the players were brought on by the coaches they replaced, but if the player was good before, what makes them less of a player now?
I would like to see an experiment (ala Borat) where an American player is introduced as some other nationality and given the chance based on their abilities.
These (Adu, Edu, Dempsey) players can play with the big boys, they deserve to have a shot.

EDITOR: The "can" in the first line should be "can't"

The situation is especially strange when you consider 1) Dempsey had a great game in the Carling Cup, even by Hodgson's admission 2) Gera has not been playing well 3) in the last two games, both Fulham losses, *no* substitutes were used whereas in both cases, they were seriously needed (Blackburn's physical presence in the midfield overwhelming Bullard & Murphy and Fulham playing the entire second half down a man against West Ham and lacked the legs to give it a real go in the last 20 minutes).

September 28, 2008  07:17 PM ET

Aurinegro, please don't start that nonsense. Most teams don't look at a players passport, just whether he's playing well and doing what he's supposed to do. Dempsey is a vitim of the coaching change last year. Players are marginalized all the time when there's a manger change. American keepers have been a staple in the EPL for years.

September 28, 2008  07:35 PM ET

stay in england. its time we have a true american talent in the epl. mcbride was close but dempsey could be better if fitted into the right club.

September 28, 2008  10:29 PM ET

Not playing for Fulham is a compliment. If you make that team you are probably a hack who plays ugly football and are more than happy to toil at the bottom of the table. Hodgson thinks he is still coaching internationally, and refuses to use his bench and has employed the "win ugly" tradition that clubs aiming for the 11th - 15th place will take you.

Ya know what, Dempsey is far too creative for a team like this. I would rather see him relax on the bench than have the life sucked out of him on the pitch. Jimmy Bullard's agent probably already has negotiations with another club and Clint should GTFO.

September 28, 2008  11:29 PM ET

He's criminally underused there. He should ask for a transfer in January if he doesn't start playing more.

September 29, 2008  12:25 AM ET

If he can't play for Fulham then what other EPL would want him? Well many teams would want him, but he would still be a benchwarmer. At least us Mexicans have Vela who is 19 and could start this year or next for Arsenal, who is a true team.

September 29, 2008  08:37 AM ET

ramirez- just b/c fulham doesnt use clint doesnt mean that other teams couldnt use him.... he brings creativity to a team as well as a striking presence... just b/c one coach doesnt see him fit to play in the starting XI doesnt mean another wouldnt....

lol....arsenal.... still cant get over their loss to Hull this past weekend >.<
------------------

reddevils- outside of GK, US players are underrated and overlooked.... its a fact, as plenty of US players have stated that due to their nationality, even if they are better then the player ahead of them, if they are european then they have to excel 3 times as much as the other player... they have to work harder, they have to succeed in all facits of the game... b/c quite frankly the US is looked down on when it comes to the sport, as its not a national sport of importance yet.... If Fulham were to play dempsey it wouldnt hurt their chances of the game, in fact it would probably improve them....THE SAME thing happened to Feilhaber with Derby.... easily one of the best players on the team and couldnt get time on the pitch... the coach simply didnt want to take a chance on an american when he's threatened with relegation....

Dempsey needs to leave the EPL.... plain n' simple... go to the Netherlands Dempsey... and GROW...

September 29, 2008  10:06 AM ET

ramirez993- you may have a player that is in a good system, but so what? USA will still beat you when it counts.

Time to move on Dempsey.

September 29, 2008  10:32 AM ET

American players should get the hell out of England and play somewhere else... There is a bias towards US players and that sux ..... We have capable players but for some reason they are never given a fair chance. England sucks bro!

Oh please. Another second-rate hack, bashing American players with the same old cliche banter. Why would other teams in the EPL want him? If you don't know that, then you haven't been following futbol in England. Clint was Fulham's top scorer last year, and for much of the year was far and away the best player on the team. But no worries "ramierez" Clint will be in form in time to help the USMNT CONTINUE to whip up on the Mexican National Team. Ole!

I have been in contact with people close to the Fulham organization and here is what they say: Hodgson does not favor American players. He wanted to get rid of ALL of them, but ownership wanted Dempsey to stay. Actually, there was a poster some time ago on T&R who also knew Hodgson (even was his asst coach in Scandanavia) and he said that RH did not favor American players. I think he'll transfer Dempsey this winter. frankly, though, clint would be better than Gera--but the problem is that Clint has never really played on the left side. Currently, Bullard is the best player on Fulham--but not playing Clint with the "duds" they have up front, is just plain ridiculous.

September 29, 2008  10:48 AM ET

Whoa whoa whoa... slow down... someone said McBride only scratched the surface but Dempsey is better? McBride is loved in London man... fans in the US aren't the only people that will agree that he's one of the best aerial players to ever play the game. He was buried on a bad squad, but the entire reason why they staved off relegation so many years (last year being Dempsey's shining beacon in McBride's absence). Dempsey's the one only scratching the surface with his talent. I firmly believe Dempsey is our best "true" central midfielder that the US has produced.

I've said it before about the state of Liverpool's midfield, an American owned team.... Dempsey could easily replace the Israeli dude whose name escapes me, and Donovan could easily replace their right winger...

September 29, 2008  10:53 AM ET

Buff: You're right, comparing Dempsey to McBride is not possible as of yet. McBride was a dependable scorer. He seem to come through just in the nick of time, and whenever you really needed him, and when it mattered most. Dempsey could still get there--but he needs to play!
