Joba's future role uncertain

Joba Chamberlain, who was out from Aug. 6 to Sept. 2 because of rotator cuff tendinitis in the right shoulder after he was converted from reliever to starter, didn't reach the 140 innings the Yankees wanted him to. Joe Girardi said it's possible next year the club could be creative in finding a way for his innings not to double. The Yankees' statistical analysis points out pitchers who exceed the previous year's innings by a large number are more prone to injury. They could skip Chamberlain in the rotation and try to keep him to about 25 starts instead of 33. They also could keep him in the bullpen where his 140 innings would impact more games. Chamberlain, who told general manager Brian Cashman that he wanted to start before the conversion was made on June 3, said he would be willing to perform in either role.

Ah, my daily Joba update.

I'm going to start a new sports news website called "_____________ future uncertain."

I've already written the next six months' worth of news.

September 29, 2008  08:53 AM ET

MY LORD......
EVERYONE in the organization has said he will be a STARTER
- his only issue (aside from injury) is INNINGS.
they don't want him going from 100 >>>200 in one season.
That's why he started in the pen this year
He will likely do the same again

What's the story?

September 29, 2008  09:15 AM ET

By all means don't up his innings too much and risk an injury. Babying him and Hughes to this point has REALLY helped keep them healthy.

September 29, 2008  09:17 AM ET

Well one things fer sure...his immediate role is playing golf, starting today....

Wow, no NY MLB team in the playoffs this year....

September 29, 2008  09:19 AM ET

SO,

What's the rotation for the Yankees and Mets this postseason?

Worry about your own rotation. Beckett's been pushed back to game 3 and who knows if he'll be anything near 100%.
Leave to a Bosox fan to be thinking about NY when they're about to begin the playoffs and their ace hurts himself.

To answer your question the Yankees will probably tee off first and rotate tee times. The Mets will probably be on the course the next day. Quite a few of them were at a nightclub last night celebrating their early vacation.

Are you a public course caddy or something, Bob? I mean really, can you shine up a new comment to replace the golf analogy? You're starting to sound like Roy, but with less creativity ...

September 29, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Well since pitch count limits and babying did so well to keep Joba, Hughes and Kennedy healthy let's continue the trend. In fact let's only let them throw pitches in the bullpen but never come out to the mound because they could slip off the mound or get hit by a line drive or have a broken bat hit them. Better to be safe than sorry.

September 29, 2008  09:48 AM ET

SO,

What's the rotation for the Yankees and Mets this postseason? BOBboston its just 3 games shorter then the Yankees postseason rotation. Know what I mean. Enjoy the West Coast. Staying up till 2am watching a loss.

September 29, 2008  09:55 AM ET

Bob in all seriousness and this is not me being a Yankee fan but the Sox are going to get killed by the Angels. Beckett has been pushed back to game 3 at best and Dice K pitched yesterday so he won't be ready until game 4 or so if the series goes that long. Angels won 100 games this year and for good reason. If in any game the Angels have the lead after 7 innings the game is over. It would have been the same way if the Yanks had made it and played them.

Typical loser's mentality...your team's in the postseason, and this is the best you can do? When the Sox flamed out in 2006, no Yankee fan I know was giving them a moment's thought.

Act like you've been there before.

September 29, 2008  10:02 AM ET

You've seen the Angels' 8-1 record against the Sox this year, including 5-1 at Fenway, right?

"Ouch."

Exactly and if the Sox were to somehow go on chances are they'd meet the Rays and the Sox went 1-8 in Tampa against them. I just don't like the Sox chances to make it very far this year.

September 29, 2008  10:07 AM ET

BobBoston is pathetic. Plain and simple. His team is going to the playoffs (albeit for a short run) and he's going on about New York. Talk about little man syndrome.

September 29, 2008  10:09 AM ET

Looks like the Yankee cry-babies are out in full force, as well as the Muts whiners!

September 29, 2008  10:10 AM ET

Is this where I go to get my new Avatar,
Joba is Fist Pumping all the way to nowhere right now. Great talent, will be great no matter where he ends up. i want him as a starter, let the kid pitch...you can't prevent injuries by jerking a pitcher around.

The Yankees will hit off the tee, into the woods, after a drop, the Mets will hit from the fairway and come up short of the green ( gee the mets coming up short, go figure) the yankess will finally chip on, and the Mets bullpen will proceed to 4 putt!

Seriously. I'm ready for my new avatar and no one shows up to claim victory. And yeah we all saw how well babying pitchers did for the Yankees this year with Kennedy, Hughes and Joba all spending time on the DL. What good is a pitcher if he can't pitch for you? Send them out and let them pitch and stop this trend of 6 inning games being something to pat a guy on the back for.

An honest question- Which is worse? Knowing your team wasn't going to make the playoffs for the last 3 weeks or thinking you were going the whole time and then being knocked out on the last day of the season?
