The starting quarterback job is officially open at Tennessee. Coach Phillip Fulmer said Sunday he would split first-team repetitions this week between current starting quarterback Jonathan Crompton and backup Nick Stephens. Fulmer said a decision on the starter would not come early this week, but added that it wouldn't be a game-time decision either.

They need more than a QB..

Not much of a Vols fan but from what I have seen so far this season it doesnt look good. I think drj0514 is right that they do need more than a QB.

Yes, it seems Tennessee is on the decline.........

September 29, 2008  02:35 PM ET

Fire Fulmer...

September 29, 2008  02:54 PM ET

How is Crompton even playing D1 ball(sorry, FBS ball)? I question the recruiting.

September 29, 2008  03:11 PM ET

Heck, try Smokey at QB...

September 29, 2008  03:21 PM ET

QB open position? uh, might be another opening there very soon as well...

September 29, 2008  07:15 PM ET

Open QB competition isnt going to help when they cant even hand the ball off. Heres and idea have an open coach competition

Thank you very much, the Tide nation is really pumped.

The quarterback talent hasn't changed at UT. David Cutcliffe is gone . . . again. UT has only been good when Fulmer has Cutcliffe, though Cutcliffe looks pretty good without Fulmer right now, even at Duke. I'm pulling for UT, hoping they'll go about 7-5 and be just good enough to keep Fulmer employed. Alabama, Georgia, and LSU can put some of that Tennessee high school talent to good use as they begin avoiding the mess that is UT.

September 29, 2008  11:14 PM ET

They need an open Coaching competion, Crompton was a top 10 QB prospect coming out of High School

September 29, 2008  11:48 PM ET

Who is going to have a better record this year... Tennessee... Or Duke???

Wow really? If that's the case then Fulmer needs to resign asap. Crompton looks like crap.

September 30, 2008  11:25 AM ET

I agree, Fulmer stinks

Isn't that why they are having a QB competition, to find somebody who can hand the ball off? Last time I checked that was the QB's responsibility. Nick Stephens only played against UAB and didn't look too bad, granted that was against an 0-2 UAB team at the time. However it doesn't take away from the fact that Fulmer needs to do what's best for UT and step down and allow a new coach to come in and rebuild the program.

he was the 3rd QB in his class behind Perrilioux and i think Dirty Sanchez

September 30, 2008  12:43 PM ET

and the truth of the matter is this:

cutcliff and peyton manning bringing in recruits is 90% of fulmers success, without cutcliff fulmer teams have stank to say the least

cutcliff knew he wouldnt be around post ainge and he didnt like crompton so crompton has no coaching for his time at ut, crompton was a sanders recruit while cutcliff was at olemiss

September 30, 2008  12:58 PM ET

I wish I could say Tennessee had reached rock bottom, but I think we all known there are deeper levels that this program is still sinking towards. 2001 was the last good team TN put on the field.

the issue is not that crompton is a bad qb...he was a highschool all american for what its worth, and he looked good as a freshman in relief of ainge. i think the issue here is bad coaching. Phils recruiting budget is almost as much as UF's entire athletic department...UT has given Phil all anyone needs to succeed, and while he did win a championship, it was over 10 years ago...UT football needs a change, and they should have fired Phil after th 5-6 season
