Ricky admits pot temptations

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano told his players to ''stay home'' and keep out of trouble during their three days away from the NFL grind last weekend. But he could never demand each player not be tempted by trouble. And that's what running back Ricky Williams admitted happened to him, if only for a few moments. Williams, in the NFL's substance-abuse program since 2002 and having tested positive four times, said Monday he was briefly tempted to smoke marijuana while the Dolphins had their bye weekend. Williams said the extra free time was the primary reason for the temptation. ''Most definitely,'' Williams said. 'It's greater because, like, Thursday, coach told us we had Friday off, so automatically your mind, which is so constrained since training camp began -- every day is a grind, it's a grind, it's a grind -- and then Coach says `you're free.' And the mind says, `I'm free, what can I do?' ``So there was definitely an urge. But I just thought about what I have to lose and it was easy. The urge didn't last very long.'' Williams said he successfully combated the urge to smoke by meditating instead.

I commend Ricky for keeping it real and telling how he really feels... I bet there are NFL players tempted by drugs waaayyy worse than a lil cheebah...

It wasn't Thomas Jefferson, it was Louise ( Weezy) Jefferson ( The Jeffersons). May be a distant relation though.

Thats what I read somewhere....progressive dude!

Its natural and grows from the ground..........more natural to humans than eating a twinkie or ho ho.

I know it may be a small step to some of us, but fact that he didn't smoke on a bye week is huge to Ricky. He's one roach from being addicted again. Hope he stays clean.

Thomas Jefferson.?..That is profiling...Just because a guy wears a wig you automatically assume he is a junky..That is so wrong.. I thought America was beyond that?

When I woke up this morning, I didn't think I would be talking about Thomas Jefferson smoking weed. Interesting..

I'm not sure he smoked it but he sure did grow hemp as did a lot of other planters for the fiber to make many products, most notably, paper. =]

Maybe he shold enter a recovery program like NA to help him through this. He's already addicted and always will be. If he's clean, good for him, but that does not stop him from being addicted.

Good that he can come out and admit that the temptation is there, and that he realizes that there's something to lose. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the sign of someone that has matured.

Will it last? Time will tell.

hopefully ricky will be able to keep it together, other wise TUNA is going to sit on him..

September 30, 2008  09:26 AM ET

I hear your noise Ricky. I myself did the wake and bake this morning before coffee. Why not take up alcohol?? It's more addicting, perfectly legal, they even have their own support group.

For those of you that would like to know more about the perils of marijuana:

Over time this relatively harmless substance has been know by many names;
kind bud, love grass, cheba, smoke, hemp, mary jane, sence, tree, weed, smoke , mother nature.....but I believe Ricky has added a new and accurate moniker.." The Temptation "

Let's Go Pens and D.Sliq: I'm not going to jump all over you or anything, but anyone who has told you that marijuana is addictive is a liar. Pure and simple. Each year; I get a couple of bad chest colds (believe me, I know they're from smoking) but for a week, sometimes 2 I can't smoke at all. Heroin addicts, Coke addicts, alcoholics can't do this. I also go on vacation a couple times of year; don't bring any pot with me, and I seem to be able to make through those vacations without needing my fix. There are also a hundred other days, or situations where I can't smoke, and I'm fine. An alchoholic, coke addict; they can't do that.

Drugs like Cocaine, Heroin and alcohol are 100 times more dangerous because the body will actually start to depend on them. If you don't have the substance in your system your body will shut down. Do you know how hard it is to detox from heroin, cocaine or alcohol? It's probably one of the most painful and excruciating experiences someone can through. Its like torture.
