Why Blackhawks waived Khabibulin

The Blackhawks took their next step toward moving Nikolai Khabibulin on Monday when they placed the veteran goalie on waivers. General manager Dale Tallon confirmed the move, and other teams have 24 hours to claim him. Khabibulin is in the final year of a four-year contract that will pay him $6.7 million this season. Moving Khabibulin would free salary-cap room for Tallon to acquire a top-line forward and open a roster spot for Corey Crawford, who is coming off two solid seasons in the minors and has proved himself ready to move up to the NHL. Crawford was projected as Khabibulin's backup until the surprise signing of Cristobal Huet.

ooh ooh, I know that one:
Because he has a large contract
Because he has been injury prone
Because they just signed a new goalie

Because BETTMAN S***S (I just wanted to add that again)

I agree with your Bettman assessment...and being an AVS fan and looking at our goalie situation...I would like to see them work something out. Can't be any worse than Jose.

I never saw the big deal about Theodore, (that Jose`?) I've always seen hiom as a pretty fair goalie with an occasional "oh wow" kind of game. Nothing really special. I wonder how Khabi would fit out there in South Park.

Ding, ding, ding, ding ding! We have a winner! Tell em what he's won Don Pardo! He's won a trip to Mexico on Mexicana arilines, 4 fabulous days and nights at the Bettmansucks Suites, a year's supply of Rice a Roni and Thomas' English muffins, the breakfast bread that's better than toast.

I'd say it has to do with Moolaa! Why would you pay that much to a backup?

Can't disagree with you on any of your four points!

Yeah, as glad as I am to see the 'Hawks be the subject of a discussion -- any discussion -- this one isn't really much of a brain teaser. I mean, who's going to argue about this? Since it is pretty obvious no one is going to take him off waivers, the only question is what kind of deal the 'Hawks can swing for him. Can't expect much, probably not more than draft picks and/or prospects...but man, a top 6 forward (center) sure would be nice.

Can I trade that in for what's behind Door #3?

they won't get JACK for him. He's not worth the money, he's not worth loosing a draft pick for him, he's not worth much quite honestly. Chicago painted themselves into a corner with this situation.

with that said, i'm shocked the GM's haven't figured out that performance based contracts should go both ways, just like the players can get bonuses for performance and cup finishes, the teams should have a "hey, after 3 of the 4 years, if you suck, we can cut the cost of the 4th year in half"

Next, the Jose Theodore comments, he's a solid goalie with a bit of a focus problem. Especially in the playoffs. The poor guy didn't help himself out either in having to live up to Roy not once, but TWICE! (Montreal expected so much of him, then the Avs...) would Khabi be any better for the Avs, meh... only one way to find out, and again i don't think the avs would pick him up. I just don't see any team picking him up.

A team like the LA Kings might pick him up on re-entry waivers, which means the Hawks will have to foot half his salary for the year. No draft picks sacrificed. No players exchanged. Just half his salary. Thay might work for a few teams. Otherwise ....... Russia!

Why did the waive him?
Isn't that a customary gesture when saying good-bye to someone...Bon Voyage.

September 30, 2008  01:31 PM ET

I've watched Crawford... He is simply a better goalie than Khab is right now. In fairness Khab has had horrible teams in front of him. He would make a great goalie for a tandem type team. Worth maybe 2.5 a year

Peace

ArchMedia: Are you suggesting that not one single team in the entire NHL would want him on their roster? Really?! That can't be. There must be someone out there with cap room and a goaltending need who will trade a prospect or a draft pick or two for a one year deal with a Stanley Cup winner. Must be.

September 30, 2008  02:06 PM ET

The only place I see Khabi going is to LA. Forget about having cap space, they need to add salary to get above the salary floor. They have a goaltender of the future in Bernier and not much else, plus a young defense corps to boot. Why not snag Khabi off waivers for nothing let him face a ton of rubber while the defense gets a year under their belts and let Bernier season in the AHL for the year.

I'm not even gonna waste my precious time (at work - wooo, so busy..) to answer to such an obvious post!

That is an excellent analysis. I see Khabi in :A too! Bet on hime being booed when he plays Phoenix too!

Re-entry waivers at hald the salary maybe. 6.7 million is way too much to pay for this guy.

You can....but behind door number 3 may be......Khabibulin! Still want to take the risk?

Or a bucket of pucks!

Again, it doesn't appear ANYONE is going to claim him off waivers. Not LA, not anyone else. If not, then it is a trade or the 'Hawks can send him to Rockford. Only when (if) they recall him does anyone have a chance to get him for half salary. But I still have to believe he's better than someone's starting goalie....
