Cowboys coach: Romo called too many passes

When quarterback Tony Romo comes to the line of scrimmage, he can call for a running play or a pass. The defensive formation dictates what he ultimately decides. Coach Wade Phillips said Romo called too many passes in Sunday's 26-24 loss. Marion Barber had only eight rushing attempts. Felix Jones didn't have any. That after the Cowboys averaged 30 rushing attempts in the first three games. "We didn't run the ball enough," Phillips said. "That's my fault." The Redskins continually had a safety close to the line of scrimmage. Running backs coach Skip Peete said the Redskins had not done that as much in the first three games as they did against the Cowboys.

Romo needs to have confidence in the O-line and Barber if this is true. Don't let the defense dictate what you're going to do. Stick to the game plan as much as possible.

I'll take my chance with Romo throwing the ball vs. Barber running. Same thing happened in the playoffs last year against the Giants. Barber had over 100 yds in the first half and in the second half they barely gave him the ball. He's a beast, no doubt about it but as long as Romo wants to be a hero let him and let the Cowboys keep losing big games.

And there you go.......poor judgement from Romo. Overrated........he aint God's gift.........he is average. I would rather have Eli.

September 30, 2008  07:43 AM ET

Am I missing something here? Who the hell is the coach and who's the player? You're telling me a QB throws that many passes and you as a coach don't step in and correct the deficiency? That's a joke and so is Phillips non-coaching a**!

September 30, 2008  07:44 AM ET

I wouldn't say it's poor judgment just on Romo. If all during the week the coaches tell you to audible if you see a safety come down, then that's what you do. The coaches should have made the adjustments during the game that you don't have to audible all the time.

jj730 - Good point, so I think you are saying the Redskins outsmarted the Boys coach.

Agreed!!!!

September 30, 2008  07:57 AM ET

the cowboys are a work in progress...like all teams..

it seems that the unusual 2007 season makes everyone think that good teams should go undefeated...not going to happen. the super bowl winner will probably lose at least 3-4 games this season...so one loss doesn't wreck a season...

it's getting a little tiresome with the instant analysis, backtracking and hypocrisy of the media, fuelled by internet fans such as ourselves...

September 30, 2008  08:09 AM ET

it's one game, not the end of their season.

September 30, 2008  08:10 AM ET

Kiwicraig78, conventional wisdom tells us that the Cowboys would not go undefeated if for no other reason than they are in the toughest divsion in the NFL right now. The "analysis and backtracking" (and yes the "hipocracy of the media") you describe is what makes pro football so exciting and gives us "internet fans" something to look forward to for the short 5 plus months we enjoy it! Think about life after February and that will put things into perspective for you! LOL

Yes, that's exactly what happened. Jason Garrett got out coached this game....kinda like what happened in the playoffs to the Giants.

September 30, 2008  08:14 AM ET

Where's Tuna when you need him?

September 30, 2008  08:15 AM ET

The problem with them boys is that they all want to be the " hero of the day" and like someone said before; who the hell is the coach here?

September 30, 2008  08:19 AM ET

Cowboystar...You are exactly right....The coaches should figure out DURING a game what is happening and fix it. That is why you practice. I would not blame Romo. IMO they got out coached. Pure and simple. They took some things away, which means there were other things that were open..Crayton could have had ten receptions that day..Felix Jones was not even on the field..It is wrong to lay the blame of that game on Romo. Their DC has nothing to be proud of either..

September 30, 2008  08:44 AM ET

It's bad defense and bad offense. Still they had a chance to win. If T.O. would have caught some critical passes that went on his finger tips. It's only one game. They will get better unless T.O. opens his mouth and continue to complain. The offense is there but they need to bring back that old Parcells defense where they held other teams down. In the past under Parcels the defense was very aggressive and the offense was conservative. Now it's the opposite. There are too much space between receivers and corners. Fix that please.

September 30, 2008  08:44 AM ET

isn't that why you have extra backs in the backfield, or an extra blocking lineman, or two tight end sets. all this is saying is that the cowboys were afraid to run the ball against the redskins. to win in this league, you've got to have a balanced offense. things could have opened up in the second half with the redskin secondary getting banged up a little bit, but you have to run the ball. washington's time of possession nearly doubled that of dallas' because they controlled the pace of the game. dallas had way too many three-and-outs because of how much they tried to force the ball through the air. you can blame the defense, but those guys were tired out there. it's like john madden was saying during the bears/eagles game on sunday night - the offense has to go out there and get some first downs and give the defense a break so that you have a chance to get back into the game. it still comes down to poor play-calling and being out-coached in the second half (and a dumb penalty).

He's an airhead. What do you expect? He's dating Jessica Simpleton.

And who are you dating?

September 30, 2008  09:05 AM ET

the OC and Coach can call all the plays they want but if Tony see's something else he his going to call something else..needed to run the ball more, take the control out of tony's hands. he needs to listen to the OC and Phillips

September 30, 2008  09:05 AM ET

It's only Week 5 now, but I'll agree that he needs to have confidence that Barber will break one.

It's up to the coaching staff to put Felix The Cat in there and let him run too...zero touches on offense? Come on!
