Pettitte flirting with retirement

Andy Pettitte, who finished the season 14-14 with a 4.54 earned run average and led the Yankees with 204 innings, will be 37 next summer. "I look at the ballpark over there and I would love to do it, but I just feel like I need to get away," he said. "It's been a long, hard year for me, and I need a good off-season, that's for sure." Pettitte has flirted with retirement before. He returned to New York for the 2007 season with the purpose of finishing his career as a Yankee. When his lingering elbow trouble cleared up, he felt well enough to pitch another season. He owns a house in the New York area and said his family was thrilled to be living back in New York. But if Pettitte seemed to be leaning toward one more season, Mike Mussina's future was still up in the air. Just because he did not make an appearance in the clubhouse Monday did not mean he could not be a topic for discussion.

no idea but I would gamble more on Pettite then I would on Mussina. Who easily could be the rotation flaw next year if he returns.

September 30, 2008  07:54 AM ET

I have an inkling that Pettitte comes back and Mussina doesn't. Andy is more interested in pitching in the new stadium than Moose is, and Moose isn't thrilled about committing himself for the probably 3 years necessary to get to 300.

Next to signing with another team, it's his best move if he wants to avoid a Torre-like offer that the Yanks know he won't accept.

Again?

No freakin flirting like your boy Roger.
Either do or don't
- I don't want to be hearing about you all winter.....
you are simply NOT GOOD ENOUGH anymore to warrant
article after article.

See ya Andy, it's been real.

September 30, 2008  09:21 AM ET

I love Andy, but it was painful to watch him pitch some times, i think its time for him to hang it up and come back as a pitching coach..

Mussina love him, he did some great things for the team this year, and i don't know that he is going to want to end his career on a low note, he won 20 games for the first time ever in his career.. He is great.. I am still up in the air about him

September 30, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Andy has to be coaxed into coming back this year so there is a good chance he hangs it up and calls it a career. But depending on how the Yanks do in free agency to obtain starting pitching and how good they feel about giving the rookies a second go around Cashman might try to convince Andy to come back for one more year. The money won't be an issue as Andy won't ask for anything crazy and Cashman will get Hal and Hank to sign off on it that same day. The allure of the new ballpark might be enough to sway Andy to come back for one more dance.

I don't think Andy can handle the AL any longer. If he wants to come back on the cheap as a 4 or 5 they should consider it but he's a 2nd half guy who was lousy in the 2nd half this year. The Yanks also can't afford a slow start for a 5th year in a row. It finally got them this year.

He has - I believe - a 16 mil PLAYER option
so it is entirely up to him.....
and the $ is (technically) an issue

That's why you don' t rely on Andy to be the savior the way they were expecting him to be the last 2 years. He will win 12-15 games for you with a 4 era but not much more than that. The Yanks need to hitch their wagon to CC (yes I'm going to advocate spending a boatload on him because it is what they need) and that in turn will take the pressure off the rest of the staff and it might even improve their numbers.

I think this year was the option that they picked up so Andy is technically a free agent. Granted he has said if he comes back it is only for the Yanks so he doesn't have much bargaining leverage but a deal for $12M might be enough to sign him.

It sure did. Came up and bit them right in the NYY25to13.

Seriously though we have had slow starts since like 2003 and have to storm back miraculously at the end to make the playoffs and finally this year they ran out of games. Nice stretch to end the year going 10-2 over their final 12 games but too little too late. The only way to make sure you make the playoffs is to start strong and end strong and next year the Yanks should look to field a team that will do just that.

September 30, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Its about time he took a bow and hit the road...I guess he realizes the Yankees are 2 or 3 years away from making another run at it,,, Good call Andy

I dunno man. As bad as they were this year they won 89 games. Even fielding a similar team with just one change would have made it. You figure Ponson or Rasner gets bounced from the rotation if CC goes in and that alone could be enough to get them to the playoffs. Granted I know it is not that simple but it's not like the Yanks finished under 500 and have no shot. They just underachieved, the Sox were their usual selves and the Rays outperformed everyone. They are not as far from making another run at it as some people think.

Well it's got to be one thing or the other. If we need to get away from the slow starts, one of the most sensible things to do would be to part ways with a high-paid, aging notorious slow starter.

September 30, 2008  10:37 AM ET

I would take him and Mussina for twelve apeice, sign CC or a FA..Wang and Joba, the kids can fill in when these guys miss starts...works for me.

September 30, 2008  10:37 AM ET

I think he retires...

September 30, 2008  10:40 AM ET

And they were not that bad this year...that is wishful thinking. A team that struggled in catagories that they are traditionally strong in...that is an off year, but they did not suck, and they could have made a playoff run had a multitude of factors not taken place, of which I will not get into as they will be contrued as whining...but tis true. They will not have so many situations to deal with next year, and they will be at a minimum in the hunt, stories of the great Yankees demise are wishful thinking.
