Tigers probably out on Renteria, K-Rod
Next year's Tigers probably won't include shortstop Edgar Renteria or record-setting relief pitcher Francisco Rodriguez. But the Tigers intend to look outside the organization for a successor to Todd Jones as the ninth-inning closer. Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said that -- and more -- in a wide-ranging, season-ending session with Tigers beat writers.

A "ninth-inning closer?" What other inning does a closer close in? That's like this thing they say in DC all the time ... "Let me borrow your ink pen." Ink pen? What else are you going to put in a pen, oatmeal??

Detroit needs a Chicago White Sox kind of off-season. Make some tough choices on people you like to put out players that make the best team, not the team with the best players.

The Tigers still have bats to spare, and when it comes down to is a great core of left handed young hitting in the Farm that is very close to ready, Joyce, Larish, Thomas, and Holliman who can switch. Detroit should make room to better get one or two of them into the everyday line-up through trades. It is known and apparent that Sheffield will not be traded, not for Detroits lack of willingness, but for lack of anything in return. And he might just get back on the horse next season anyhow. Truth is, for Detroit to get better, younger, and stronger- their best option is to trade Maggs. While it will cause riots in the faithful if it turns into another bust trade, Maggs is still the hope of the organization in alot of ways. He helped turn the club around a few years ago when no one woud give him much of a chance- and although his team was terrible, he made ANOTHER strong run at a batting title this year! Maggs is Detroits hope via trade- he is the only guy on our squad that could clout some good return in pitching... That is what Detroit needs... Oh and a shortstop...

The numbers that Renteria put up this season are very deceiving. Anyone who watched the Tigers this season knows that. But I would not be shocked if the Tigers brought him back. Comments made by Leyland this past week regarding moving Guillen to left are very telling. Do not be surprised if that was not a signal to other teams that Guillen is available. The Tigers do not have a position for him.

I think K-Rod ends up in NY...for the Mets that is.

Renteria needs to go back to the N.L. where he can actually hit. As for the Tigers.....the dumbest thing for them to do would be to trade Mags. They need to get rid of some of their dead weight SP's and retool their bullpen. I remember on this same board all of you Detroit fans bad mouthing the Sox and Twins after you signed Miggy and D-train......and no bullpen help. This is one of the reasons Verlander struggled all year. The guy had to not throw so hard to make sure he made it to the 7th or 8th inning to make sure his bullpen didn't blow it for him. His bread and butter come at 98 mph! just my 2 cents

K-Rod was great this year, but buyer beware. I think most of you remember a guy named Eric Gagne. From 2002-2004 he was great with 52,55,45 saves. Then in '05-'06 he pitched in 9 gms total. Went to the Rangers and Red Sox and was booed out of town. By this time with the Brewers he wasn't even a closer anymore. No one know when an injury will happen or you lose your focus (or stop taking steroids) and paying big money to a closer could be risky business.

Number one, the Verlander comments had true merit I must ask you, who could Detroit trade, for what they are paid or performed- that could command the trade value than Maggs? Two- "They need to get rid of some of their dead weight SP's and retool their bullpen." that is the single most obvious statement you can make. Duh- but again where and how would you accomplish this though O Master of the obvious? You tell me as a club that would be the dumbest thing the Tigers could when he is getting older, under the last year of his contract, is not paid like so many other prolific hitters in the game now, can still play outfield, and made a strong effort to repeat his batting title this season. If not him, then whom? Keep him when we already have Sheffield as DH, now Guillen who could be soon as well, what renew an old hitter that is always just a season closer to the end of his career? What make the same mistake so many clubs did with the Big Hurt, Frank Thomas? No thank you, so many players on this club had the worst season of thier careers, some will rebound- some won't. But in a line-up like Detroits, if you don't know that trading Maggs would be one of the best things for the organization to trade him, you don't know crap about the club and should really save the new acct avitar there and your 12 comments for clemens or Bonds threads where thew newbies play... Especially when you were here at the beginning of the season to read those threads reaks of lack of knowlege on the club...

Brandon Inge should not be playing in the major leagues. I can't believe that Tigers fans didn't run him out of town after he helped blow the series in 2006. Dumbrowski seems to know just how to get a team going, but the you see him keeping around dead weight like Todd Jones and Inge. How are you going to start a team with so many stars and then have a couple of turds like that on your starting roster?
