Indiana points finger at Sampson

Indiana University denied an NCAA charge of "failure to monitor" its men's basketball program, saying in a written response that its compliance system exceeded standard practices and could not have stopped coaches intent on cheating. "This is an unethical conduct case, not a failure-to-monitor case," the response said. The response said the committee seems to be making the failure-to-monitor charge "simply because Indiana University hired Kelvin Sampson." The coach had admitted similar NCAA violations when IU hired him from Oklahoma. The penalties followed him to IU.

hire a KNOWN dirtbag & you expect him to magically change?

IU got what it deserved- live with the fallout and MOVE ON

- and T&R please stop showing sampson playing with his ****

I can see IU's point, that Sampson is the culprit.......but they made the decision to hire a known sleazeball. They kind are due what is coming to them.

What? They couldn't keep him in compliance? I'm shocked! SHOCKED!!

This would be like Texas Tech complain about Knight having anger issues.

"This is an unethical conduct case, not a failure-to-monitor case"

The NCAA should slam them for that comment alone

There is no excuse for that excuse. One of the major audit functions is to detect and prevent unethical conduct. If they had no audit procedures in place to detect fraud in Sampson's reporting, then they failed to monitor, just as charged.

Sampson was the biggest jackass in college basketball. Good riddance. His reputation is permanently tarnished. The only way he can win is to cheat.

"who, me??"

Kelvin Sampson is the one who should have had sanctions placed on him...A system that lets these coaches go free while schools and student/athletes pay the penalty is just plain wrong...You cannot separate the two..

Agree, he should be banned from coaching in the NCAA, not that anyone would hire him anyway! Granted, he would probably never return, he got his big payday, and although he doesn't need the money it would still be a blemish if he was banned.

They worry about indiana over phone calls but the USC football players get money and cars from the school and agents. Looks like a witch. Is NCAA go to put santions on USC.

Thanks again IU. We had about all we could handle with his Heart, Hustle, Hardwood BS.

December 16, 2008  10:03 PM ET

No doubt scdog. USC has had many apparent violations over the years that seem to have become cold cases. SOME universities self-report and take their licks while USC decides to sweep it all under the rug and no one asks questions? ****?

The difference between USC and other schools that self report the violations is simple. They just say prove it if you can, the other schools say here is what happen go easy on me. It's like somebody waving over a police officer to tell them that there were speeding and expect not to get a ticket.
