Giants to pursue Sabathia

Rather than weaken the rotation, the Giants might take one bold move to strengthen it. There are indications the Giants plan to investigate the Hope Diamond of free-agent pitchers this winter, CC Sabathia, to gauge his interest in returning to his native Bay Area. The team does not plan to wade into the rest of the market for starters. As GM Brian Sabean said Monday, "We'll look heavily in the market for relief help. Whether we decide to do that with a starting pitcher remains to be seen because I think the price is going to be exorbitant." Sabathia is going to command a massive contract, too, but could be the one starter worth the millions he gets. His signing also could provide Sabean the flexibility to move other pitchers for offense. The question is whether Sabathia wants to come to San Francisco. One national columnist reported the Giants are his first choice, but Sabathia told The Chronicle in June he was wary of pitching so close to his Vallejo home.

Why not add the Giants to the mix? It's gonna be all about the highest bidder, and the Giants are high rollers this off season.

I wouldn't want to go to the Giants if they don't win the World Series this year. I'd want to pitch for a contender.

September 30, 2008  09:49 AM ET

The Giants are the one team that seems to need bats as much as pitching.

September 30, 2008  09:49 AM ET

This would be interesting......The Giants could be a player with the whole home-town thing going on.

September 30, 2008  09:55 AM ET

I just don't see the giants spending possibly 140mil on a pitcher
after the zito fiasco- considering lincecum is clearly a #1 type
- I woudn't say they don't 'need' him- ANY team could
but that isn't what the are desperate for

Well, we can only wait and see, but I don't like their chances.

This is a laugh, San Fran got burned by one payrole buster in Zito they will no way spend the kind of money needed to sign this guy.

The only difference between this arcticle and the las one is that...so what? The Giants won't go anywhere next year with or without him.

Why would Sabathia want to play for the Giants? So he can lose 1-0 games? The Giants may be the home town team, but they aren't anywhere near being a contender.

What was Lincecum's record this year?

I disagree. In that shitstain of a division, any team could win.

What was his ERA?...

What was Matt Cain's record?

Matt Cain did not pitch as well as CC or Lincecum. They're not in the same league.

They're not in the same league.

Figuratively speaking, of course.

2.62, .008 better than Sabathia who spent half the year in the AL.

Sabathia's ERA in the NL was 1.65.

September 30, 2008  11:22 AM ET

That still does not solve that teams TERRIBLE hitting issue.

That is my point though, in order to have a good record on the Giants...
anyway the Giants aren't going anywhere with or without CC next year.

But that was my point, CC would have a... anyway. That whole division sucks. Any team could win it, even the Giants with CC.

Manny, will take over the Bondsman's old locker and Lazy Boy recliner.... Sabathia has offered to pitch all Zito's starts as long as Zito can cook pata al dente...
