Sources: Other teams wanted Cashman
According to industry sources, Brian Cashman could have left The Bronx for Seattle or Philadelphia and was atop the list of another team that is going to soon have a GM opening. However, Cashman opted yesterday to remain the Yankees' GM when he signed a three-year deal that will take him through the 2011 season. Terms of the deal weren't announced, but Cashman's old contract was for three years and $5.4 million. Since pay cuts are rare, it's safe to assume Cashman's new pact is on the other side of $6 million.

It's a great day for the Red Sox, the most over-rated exec in MLB is back to underachieve for another 3 years in New York. I don't know how this guy keeps his job. He took over Gene Michael's team (Posada, Jeter, Mariano, & Bernie) and got to go along for the ride for 3 rings and has overseen them fail for 8 years in a row as Stick Michael's guys get older. The Yankees have drafted ONE position player under Cashman who has amassed 200 ML at bats. That's one since 1998, you can look it up. I can't even remember the guy's name.

So he is another one of these NY Fat Cats now, eh? Good for you Brian. Way to take the pay to stay where playoffs are going to be very hard to come by in the Bronx in future years.

Cashman is a loser. Here's a guy who is given the highest payroll in baseball and he still can't bring home the trophy. His team isn't even in the playoffs. Imagine what Larry Beinfest (Marlins) could do with a NY, Boston, LA, or Chicago type payroll? WOW!

"other teams wanted cashman". really? uh...WHY? you can't even build a PLAYOFF team, let alone a WS team with what amounts to an unlimited payroll? yeah sure, i'd hire him and let him work with a payroll thats not even close to that. uh huh...sure, thats smart. how about these geniuses hire whomever works for the MARLINS. they have the payroll of a local p0rno store and yet they always have young bright talent. THATS who i'd be looking to hire. god help the MLB if the marlins ever WANTED to win, ya know...and spend money. they'd dominate

I am glad he is staying, its not the time to bring in a new GM that doesn't know the organization or the people in it, its a time to have someone hat knows how and why the yankee's work.. NOW we can get on to more imporant things, like signing some pitchers

Next year in the playoffs...
There really was not much doubt about this, he wanted to stay, they wanted him to stay...

Why would anybody want Cashman? He likes to throw huge amounts of money at washed up or unproven players. Examples: Carl Pavano, Johnny Damon, Randy Johnson He apparently is not good at acquiring young talent proven by some of his busts shown this year. Examples: Melky Cabrera, Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy Not to mention some of his awesome trades such as that "season changing" one for Ivan Rodriguez. He also fired one of the greatest coaches of all time who is sitting in the playoffs with his new pal Manny right about now while A-Rod and Giradi sit at home. A real genius of a GM would have to be John Schurhoelz when he was the gm for the Braves. Let me know when Cashman can put together a string of AL East titles like the Braves did in the NL East under Schurhoelz.

bgbraves, that is a really off base assesment.
Nady, Marte, And amany of the "big" names were driven by ownership and not him. Many of the moves that did not pan out that were him were smart baseball moves. Winning 89 games in a down year is not really failure, especially when saddled with some back ends of contracts. I would bet you attrribute those same moves to lots of people and not just Cash to "prove" your point. Again, that is not an accurate assessment of the job Cash has done.
I guess the headline says a lot in this case, baseball teams wanted him.

$100,000 for running the team for the 3 years.
5.9 million for having to talk to Hank.
Sounds about fair.

sounds about right.
Except I think Cash would pay them to GM the Yankees, if it weren't for the Steinbrenners.

Hey All Starz,
Cash has been no better then OK. Many of the Yanks youngsters have been disappointing to date. Even Wang he was unsure on, he tried 4 other pitchers before bringing him up.
I thought the Nady trade was a real good one and now that he has less interference I'll be curious if he does better evaluating pitchers. He has really only had a couple of years as the GM. Prior to that he just had the title but the cabal in Tampa had as much power as him so even the kids coming up now may or may not be his.
Let's see if Shurholtz can win any divisions without a prime Sholtz, Glavine and Maddox. I could have won the NL East that year with those 3 in their prime.

three years sounds fair for both Cashman and SOS. Ya feel challenged, huh, Brain? Well go out and prove yourself then. And I dare both, you and SOS, to recreate the Yankees by bringing the salary budget under at least $170 mil.

From what I've seen and read lately Hal is actually very reasonable and makes the vast majority of the decisions with Cashman. Hank just seems to run his mouth, not the team. He really is his fathers son.

I don't know if the Steinbrenners will let him have a payroll that low. They seem to enjoy the status of spending the most because it proves their "commitment to winning and to the fans". It's a load or crap but we are talking about Steinbrenners.

Wow a lot of Cashman hate today on the boards. For all those bashing him and praising Gene Michael (rightfully so as the Stick was a damn good GM) remember that Stick was GM while Steinbrenner was suspended from baseball. That means Gene got to make the moves he wanted to and not the ones George wanted. Cashman wasn't so lucky. He had to make the moves George told him to. So when Cash wanted Vlad he had to sign George's pick of Sheffield. When Cashman wanted to hold onto Lily he had to trade him for Weaver. He was also forced to trade away Vazquez for Johnson and had to sign Igawa because Steinbrenner didn't want the Sox to trump him when they signed Dice K. Cash has made some mistakes (Wright and Pavano) but name a GM who hasn't. The point is Cashman did not have the freedom to really act as a GM until only recently. So don't be so quick to judge his job performance.

Well they are losing $80M off the payroll so they start the winter at $130M or so before any moves are made. Now we all know they won't leave it that low but also they won't be able to spend so much money that they get it back over $200M either. Even if they signed CC and Teixeira to deals that paid them both $20M next year that puts the payroll at $170M and after that they won't spend much else so very likely they are under $200M this year.

Stick wasn't the GM when George was kicked out I believe it was Bob Watson. Stick did run the team and he, Watson and Buck were able to build the team. Everyone thought George still had input but the commish was looking for an excuse to suspend him indefinitely so the Yanks kept Petitte and Bernie even though Stienbrenner didn't like them and continued not to like them. Bernie had to call him and take less to avoid going to the Sox.
Dead on with the Vlad Sheffield thing. Wanting Kevin Brown and letting Petitte go to get him cost them 2004.
I still think Cashman hasn't proved much yet but the Yanks lost this year because A Rod and Giambi couldn't hit with RISP, especially in clutch situations and I'd be shocked if those 2 contracts were his idea.

Giambi was Steinbrenners idea because he wanted to have the marquee name Giambi on the team to sell more tickets. Cashman wanted to keep Tino. The Arod deal I think was mutual because they had to get him so the Sox wouldn't and even though he has proven to be unclutch at the time (and even today) he was considered the best player in the game. And Arod has won 2 MVP awards while a Yankee so it's not like he has been a bust. He just hasn't lived up to the lofty expectations that come with a $27.5M a year salary.
