Phillies outfielder tweaks back

Pat Burrell walked gingerly from the batting cage into the clubhouse yesterday at Citizens Bank Park. He didn't look right. He wasn't. He felt some discomfort in his lower back on a swing during batting practice. He will be evaluated today. No other information was available, so it was unclear whether he will play this afternoon against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1 of the National League division series. Burrell hit .250 with 33 home runs and 86 RBIs this season, but just .178 with three homers and 11 RBIs in his last 29 games. If he cannot play, Jayson Werth will move to left field, and Geoff Jenkins or Matt Stairs will start in right against righthander Yovani Gallardo.

Oh Lord Geoff Favre Jenkins or Matt Stairs? Ohhhhhhhh lordy....the curse is alive.

October 1, 2008  08:05 AM ET

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Matt Stairs bat, but they are going to need the Phantic's car to get that tub around the bases.

ZZZZZzzzz, it's baseball, one level above cricket. Inject him with a pain killer and move on the the next guy.

Id rather have Stairs in there....i hate jenkins. Stairs hasnt given me anything to complain about yet. But im sure his fat a ss will after todays game. Burrells been horrible lately anyway, and its not like his base running is anything to cheer about.

Not exactly the news the Phils wanted on the eve of the playoffs. They'll miss Burrell's bat if he doesn't play. I'd personally think Jenkins is a better option.

Come on people. If it were Ryan Howard or Chase Utley going down then there would be reason for concern. Pat Purrel is a very good player but if the big stars of this team step up like they are capable of doing then this will not be a problem. The Phillies are based on pitching anyway.

Phills based on pitching? Pfffff based on waiting for a pitcher to blow the game for us. I pray to god Madson doesnt throw one damn pitch the whole series.

Madson hasn't given up a run since that Thursday night in Chicago. I think he's alright.

The Phils are based on a myriad of things, with no standout individuals, this is a collective. That being said, Pat can be a game changer, hopefully if he is out it will be for a short period of time.

pat hits bombs, they NEED that bat in there.

October 1, 2008  01:27 PM ET

.178? They would be better off playing a relief pitcher in his spot!

Pat the Bat... Pat seems he's been trying to hit with a broom stick. Phillies will be ight. Chase seems he's coming back to life and Howard is being the beast he is. LETS GO PHILLIES. Man it feels good to have a playoff win under our belts.
