Leyland's future in Detroit uncertain
Jim Leyland wanted a vote of confidence. He didn't get it. He had a talk with his boss, Dave Dombrowski, but when it was done, Leyland had the same one-year left on his contract that he had when it started. After Monday's loss in rainy Chicago, cementing a last-place, 74-88 finish, Leyland returned to Detroit, packed up and drove home to Pittsburgh. As the highway rolled past, he thought about what went wrong this year. And Tuesday afternoon, when we spoke for a radio interview, he revealed, for the first time, that his Tigers' long-term future was up in the air.

It should be up in the air. Dude had the most talented team going into the season, "the" pick to win the AL. The failure to avoid last place is so embarrassing that the ax should fall on Jimmy.

This is why I like Dombrowski. He stands up to managers like Leyland.
Yesterday he also admitted he made a mistake trading Renteria for Jurrjens.
Its not that I am glad he makes mistakes, but he admits them, and makes the tough decisions to cut losses. A certain other GM (and many others) aren't able to make the tough calls on what needs to be done.
Another mistake he made was trading Pudge for Farnsworth, should have gone with the prospect loaded package from some of the other teams.

Dombrowski is playing this correctly. If around June 1st next year the Tigers are playing well, offer Leyland the extention. If he holds a grudge and turns it down, then why would you want him managing the team anyway?
For those who say that Leyland will lack authority with his players being a lame-duck manager, someone will have to remind them that after the 2008 disaster, EVERYONE connected with the team is a potential lame duck, and should act accordingly.

Well put TGR and Bim... This year was a disaster, and it's best the team put it behind them- but now without forgetting how terribler it was. And an extension would just reak of management believing it was all just tough luck... There is no reason to extend Jim. I agree with tgrfan1- if they come out of the gate strong- then lets talk extension. If not, time to look around for someone to lead the team.

Isn't there a rule that if you finish behind the Royals, you have to resign?

If there isn't there should be.

But then they used to have that rule for the Rays...

I always got the feeling that Leyland thought he was untouchable. Obviously he is not. Perhaps a new pitching coach will help but only if Leyland defers to him on pitching change decisions. Also Leyland has got to stop playing his favorites, (Sheff), and play the best players. I agree with an earlier post that if the Tigers are winning next June, extend Leyland. if not, cut him loose. I am actually kind of surprised that Leyland didn't bail out during this disastrous season. And for goodness sake Jim, stop eating during your post game press conference. It???s disgusting.

I think he will start the season, but will eventually resign. I have said this from the time he was hired in Detroit (Pre-Fannation days) that he is wired too tight. Let the TRUTH paint you the picture of how this will probably unfold:
Detroit, MI
May 3 or 4 2009...
After losing 5 of their last 7 games, Tigers skipper Jim Leyland will burst into tears while smoking a marlboro and sob about Alan Trammel again..and how he just can't take it. He baseball's George Karl.

jimmy leyland is absolutely the best mgr in the game; indeed wired pretty tight and that wiring is what propelled them to bein with......he has values and character and expects the same in return..........give him a 3 year deal and it will payoff handsomely!!

A lot of his decisions this season were pretty wacky and left Tigers' fans scratching their heads. He needs to get a solid game plan, set a rotation and a lineup, and stick with it. I agree to see how the '09 season starts to pan out before offering an extension. No excuse for this team to have finished under .500, despite the pitching.

Just wondering, how you are related to Leyland? With so much character, maybe he should have a sit-com.

Keep Jimmy crack corn, trade Mags for an "A" grade pitching prospect, a "B" grade pitching prospect and a "B" grade shortstop that can play 100 games a year and has consistently bat .250. I think Toronto or San Fransisco might have all of those ingredients.
