Teammate critical of Hanley Ramirez

Though Hanley Ramirez was very good hitting mostly leadoff, one veteran teammate said he better adjust to hitting third next year to maximize his RBI potential and contract; bemoaned Ramirez's sometimes ''lazy'' defensive play; and said players thought Jorge Cantu and Ricky Nolasco should have been team MVPs instead (Marlins beat writers voted for Ramirez). ''Where's his defensive focus day in, day out? That's what makes Derek Jeter so special,'' one NL scout said.

Gotta love those guys who speak their minds while hiding behind anonymity. What a puss.

Focus isnt something you can coach. If it isnt in his heart, at least love the guy for his remarkable bat.

Derek Jeter? Jeter is an above average SS defensively. If you wanna talk about someone's defensive abilities/liabilities, Derek Jeter is not a good comparison. Alex Rodriguez was a better SS than Jeter but Jeter was "Mr. Yankee" so he wasn't gonna move.

And he also had rings....you don't move the captain with rings.

A defensive standout comparison involving Derek Jeter. Now that's comical.

October 1, 2008  09:30 AM ET

When reading that quote, it doesn't seem that it's a "defensive standout comparison" as much as a focus comparison. Say what you will about Jeter's defensive skills, but the guy is focused.

October 1, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Maybe they should just go ahead and trade him to the Cardinals.

October 1, 2008  10:14 AM ET

Its true though, Hanley doesn't play good defense.

Well said Slinky.

The Marlins do not have a good defensive team overall..... Dan Uggla is really a butcher at 2nd(remember the All Star game).... so the team was build for offense..... so what? .....

October 1, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Hanley Ramirez is the cornerstone and face of this franchise now, he should be put in the position where he can be most productive. Jorge Cantu and Ricky Nalasco had great years but this team would not have stood a chance without Hanley Ramirez.

October 1, 2008  11:04 AM ET

He is the next big name they will trade for more prospects so this matters as to how much they will get for him.

October 1, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Hanley is an all-star and will be an all-star for many years, an he's what 26. Numbers don't lie and he is the best player on that team, so he should get the team MVP. Of course I don't know what goes on in the clubhouse I'm not a Marlins player, I play X-Box 360 I like to keep my otptions open in case any team comes around asking for my illustrious batting capabilities, my superb defense in CF, and my missile arm. Anyways, I do think Jorge Cantu and Ricky Nolasco should also be mentioned b/c they have played their butts off and both had great years.

He plays like he lacks TWO opposable thumbs

1 down, 10 to go! LETS GO PHILLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh yeah, the marlins suck

How do you measure defensive "focus"? Jeter may be focused but he's not a great defensive shortstop.. not even close.

October 2, 2008  08:28 AM ET

Why does he cite Jeter when he was statistically ranked the worst starting SS in the leage by baseball prospectus. Now I understand that defensive statistics are far from reliable but he could of used any number of players instead of the now overrated Jeter.

October 2, 2008  05:47 PM ET

I wish the Phillies would go after either Cantu or Nolasco. They would be a great fit in Philly.

....mentally challenged comment at its finest. I guess years from now you can say it to his memorabilia in Cooperstown. Rings speak louder than words. So to your dumb **** comment all Yankee fans dedicate a Bronx Cheer to you Ahole.
