Boss silent on Torre's future

Interpreting George Steinbrenner's silence is always dangerous. He might not think being 35-33 and nine games out is something to feel good about. Or he might not want to address Joe Torre's future. If Steinbrenner has been paying attention he has to be impressed with the turnaround, something the players believe was facilitated by Torre's calming presence when the Yankees' sky was falling. Still, The Boss doesn't seem overly impressed. Maybe, like others, he believes the resurgence is due more to the competition ( White Sox, Pirates, Diamondbacks and Mets) than anything else.

George isn't going to fire anybody unless it his his private nurse if she forgets to empty his drool cup, bless his heart.

Honestly, how are you going to do better than Torre? If you want to portray your team as the most professional, and the Yankees do, then Torre is your guy. He is a class act, media savvy, player friendly and a good manager.

As much as I hate the Yankees, I must say that got a damn good manager in Torre and I have to agree with the Yankee faithful- who else can replace him that is out in today's coaching market? Even a season without a playoff apperance is not worth Torre's career. Besides, a 9 game winning streak and current hot streak is nothing to fire Torre over.

If any of you read the NY Post, like I do daily, you know that this story was a page filler. It was probably written days ago waiting for them to actually lose a game, so they didnt look stupid printing it on a day they won. The Post is a tabloid...this just proves it. I read this story a half hour ago and laughed. I wrote it down in my diary. "The Post told a really funny joke today"....I thought it was a joke!

June 20, 2007  10:13 AM ET

READ the Post? so that is what you do with it. I have just been looking at all the pretty pictures.

June 20, 2007  10:39 AM ET

OK, let me get this straight...Torre gets 200 million dollars worth of players and his team is sitting a hair over .500 and 9 back and y'all think he's doing great? The Twins had 1/3 of their salary last year and finished 1 game behind the Yanks and Mets for best record in baseball, and y'all STILL think he's doing great? They've had the highest payroll in baseball in the last 7 years...by far...All-Stars at pretty much every position with no rings to show for it and you STILL thinks he's doing great?

June 20, 2007  11:03 AM ET

Mattingly is your man, Yankee Boys, and you might as well get used to the idea. The Boss loves the dude, and once offered him his daughter.

June 20, 2007  11:10 AM ET

Torre or Cashman, who's first to go?

Torre, 9 games out and counting..
Cashman, Pavano and Igawa...

Wow, tough choice for George to make..

Best of Luck on the Wild Card...

June 20, 2007  11:15 AM ET

well at least they went on that WINNING streak....boy did that help them. Or else i think TORRE might have been fired!

June 20, 2007  11:18 AM ET

I think dumping Torre right now will only makes things worse.

Which of course I wouldn't mind one single iota. So by al means, George...

June 20, 2007  11:24 AM ET

Torre is great. You want to watch money go follow the stock market. In baseball money doesn't play, doesn't get to bat and doesn't throw a pitch, people do and they need to be managed.

June 20, 2007  11:31 AM ET

Jim L.....the Yankee manager (and even the Bo Sox manager) didnt get his job for being a master strategist or for his ability to navigate the intricacies of the game. Those managers are there to manage men and their egos. Its simply put. Though they differ...Torre and Francona do the same thing. Torre keeps everyone in check...and Francona to a lesser extent (he basically makes sure everyone shows up and that Manny took his meds). That is not to minimize what those 2 have done. One ran a dynasty and one ended almost a century of futility. But to manage in these places you have to have guile. Thats why someone like Girardi is better off managing kids, or why Showalter isnt highly thought of. They like x's and o's. Guys like Torre like sanity.

June 20, 2007  11:34 AM ET

Also....Scoscia, Gardenhire, La Russa, Girardi and such are great managers. Could they manage the Yankees? I'm leaning toward no, no matter what you guys think. I'm a firm believer that these big market clubs need guys with a presence, not a guy that wants the nuts and bolts tightened. Different types of managers for different types of success.

June 20, 2007  11:37 AM ET

Joe Torre could not manage his way out of a paper bag. The only way he was able to win was Steingrabber's big pockets. He sucked in Atlanta. He sucked on the Mets.

June 20, 2007  11:39 AM ET

They should be in King No Ring Don Mattingly!

June 20, 2007  11:45 AM ET

Ed...I hate to be in a position to defend Torre, because I too believe that he is just a bad in-game tactician. But please. Money cant buy you championships...which is obvious with a $200 million plus payroll for half a decade. Torre's best work was managing a team of super-talent that did at times come highly expensive. You dont supervise a dynasty because of money and luck. I'm sorry...but I'm with the Torre supporters on this one.

June 20, 2007  12:11 PM ET

Bragging about the highest payroll in baseball? WHY is that something to be proud of? HEY I'm proud to be an American cuz we have a trillion dollar debt!!!!! HELL YA!!!!! I'm just waiting for Steinbrenner to dictate another manifesto while lifting weights.......

June 20, 2007  12:13 PM ET

You're right - the Yankees should have been bunting on Schilling all night -- so Red Sox fans could whine about it for the next ten years.

Dizzle: I disagree that Francona does such a good job managing Manny's meds.

June 20, 2007  12:14 PM ET

If you want to nitpick my comments go right ahead....I'm just pretty sure that you cant keep up with me anyway. If you want me to explain words like intricacies and tactician I'll go right ahead. I'm here for you man.

In your 'what have you done for me lately' world Joe Torre is now a blip on your radar. I find it comical. Really. Smart Yankee fans know that it wasnt just about money. And I'm friendly with at least a couple smart Yankee fans.

June 20, 2007  12:14 PM ET

That mini-rant wasnt directed at you booradical.

June 20, 2007  12:24 PM ET

I agree 1000% with your assessment Moondizzle.
I have state the same on other days in other places.
