Mets open to trading Wright, Reyes?

If you are Mets general manager Omar Minaya, then, you have to conclude that all of these failures in the clutch are no coincidence, and to win a championship you have to be willing to take a chance and make a move that goes beyond finding some new arms for the bullpen. I think Minaya has to at least keep an open mind about trading either David Wright or Jose Reyes if a blockbuster deal is out there to be made. It's probably not realistic to think he'll pull the trigger there, however, and it's still too soon to give up on either of them as chokers.

Well, you will have plenty of time to think things over with an extended offseason.

ARE YOU NITS!!!!!!!! These guys are the conerstone of the team. Am I missing something. The bullpen has blown 29 saves. All the hits ,HR's, stolen bases cant overcome the fact that the bullpen was hard pressed to get a win in the 8th or 9th ininng. If the bullpen had 5 saves we wounld not be having this conversation. The thing that makes me the most upset is that if a dummy such as myself can figure this out how com so called baseball professionals like Omar & the Wilpons cant!!!! All they had to do was feel the anger of the crowd after the Mets lost the last game, like me & my family did. But of course the are too afraid to come out of thier "Ivory Offices", and too busy giving favoriable interview to thier friends on WFAN. The Mets management is soo out of touch with the fan base & realityof baseball operations. I for one will not buy a ticket to Citi Field for the 2009 season.

Beltran is the guy that has to go. Ridiculously overpaid and I'm surprised he doesn't get called on the carpet more often.

October 1, 2008  07:55 AM ET

Cully nailed it. I can't believe management would consider getting rid of their best offensive players when the problem is obviously with their bull pen. If they fix their relief pitching, the Mets would be a post season contender. Where's the logic in wanting to deal Wright or Reyes? I have a flat tire so I'm going to get a new engine. ****?

October 1, 2008  08:02 AM ET

This isn't a story or rumour a writer (not apart of Mets management) made a random suggestion and it passes as something of importance on this site.

October 1, 2008  08:03 AM ET

They should get rid of Delgado and Beltran and see if they can at least get some young minor league studs in return to shore up that gawd-awful bully that killed the Mets down the stretch.

October 1, 2008  08:10 AM ET

I personally hate the Mets, but how could anyone even consider trading Reyes (200 hits, Stolen bases) and Wright (120 plus RBI) when the Mets real problem was that bullpen. I love my Phillies but if the Mets had anything that resembled a bullpen they win the division by 10 games. Aaron Heilman needs a ride to the airport, not Wright and Reyes.

October 1, 2008  08:29 AM ET

The people that need to go are the phony "spammers"....talk about losers. Looks like they are setting up for the CC Sabathia fight.

October 1, 2008  08:30 AM ET

It's pretty obvious that Minaya favors more Latino's and less American ballplayers. See ya David your skin doesn't fit the vision Minaya has for his team.

October 1, 2008  08:35 AM ET

New York open to trading the Mets.

October 1, 2008  08:36 AM ET

HollyBull, come on with the stupidity? Wasn't "Reyes" mentioned in the article as well. Stop fanning racism in a post where it has no place. Since you're so obsessed with the numbers of Latinos on the Mets, lets talk about the percentage of white ballplayers in MLB? Who cares? If you can hit, field, pitch and defend, then you get a chance. Cut the crap out and go back to kneeling to your Fox News banner moron.

Wait and see Moe Wait and see!!

October 1, 2008  08:42 AM ET

I love how reports with little intelligence and understanding of baseball put out crap like this.

Anyone want to try and replace Reyes' 360 OBP and 100 runs. Or perhaps replace David's 30 HR, 125 RBI, and 115 runs. Or Beltran's 25 HR, 115 runs, and 115 RBI.

Is it my misconception that these numbers are actually phenomenal? Where are all the Rah-Rahs from 2006 whos declared David the "clutchiest" player on earth.

David is a top 5 player in this league. Beltran and Reyes are top 20 players in this league. Makes real sense to trade that away. The problem with this team WAS AND IS the bullpen. The Mets were the 2nd best offense in the league.

October 1, 2008  08:44 AM ET

Wait and see for what? Like I said, I hate the Mets but Minaya wants to win as much as the next guy, so if they go get K-Rod are you gonna scream racism and ignore those 62 saves he had this season? Ridiculous! Minaya is not unlike any other GM, he has preferences, just like Pat Gillick has preferences just like Brian Cashman, just like Ed Wade had preference when he was here.

October 1, 2008  08:46 AM ET

As a Mets fan, the article is ridiculous. We???ve all seen the stats, 16 blown saves since Wagner went down, something like 8 loses after being up by 4 or more runs etc, etc. It???s not so out of this world that two kids feel the weight of every Met Fan and press and try too hard because they know their bullpen won???t hold a lead. What they should have done was unload Heilman to a team that would use him as a starter to get some sort of arm in the bullpen.

As for Beltran, while he might be over priced after cashing in on his playoff run in Houston, but you don???t trade a 30-30 guy that is one of the best defensive center fielders in the game.

October 1, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Yes the bullpen cost the Mets the division......but the Mets scored only 5 runs in the final series against the fish. This team has to take a serious look at the core (Reyes, Wright, and Beltran) and figure out why they can't step up in a big spot. These three are among the best players in baseball but they don't know how to win.
Maybe the Mets need to bring in someone who does....like a Manny Ramirez.

Moe, the only person who mentioned racism is you. I didn't say I hate latinos or there more prone to base running mistakes! I just made an observation about the Mets and their team culture. Thats all, If we could discuss race more openly perhaps our society would be a little better off . However, the second anything is mentioned its deemed racists. Thats you opinion not a fact. I'm aware I presented my opinion; I didn't call anyone a greasy ****. This is why how Israel gets 3 billion a year from the federal gov't with no questions asked. Because if someone ever does raise a question. Israel's lobbyist drag there name through the mud and they are labeled Anti-Semites. way to go Moe you just set back our country another decade. Typical!

October 1, 2008  09:03 AM ET

Uh HollyBull, thanks for making my point. You went from talking baseball to Israel. I think we all know what your agenda is here. My agenda is hating the Mets, yours is making your short-sighted views heard and tying them into sport.
