Cal reopens quarterback competition

Unhappy with the way Cal's offense has started games, coach Jeff Tedford re-opened the starting-quarterback competition Tuesday. The Bears have outscored opponents 45-17 in the first quarter, but the offense has scored only 24 of those points. The offense has no first-quarter touchdowns since Week 2. "We cannot afford to continue to wait and wait and wait for things to happen," Tedford said. "We need to find out who's the guy who can put us in the best position to start a little bit faster." To answer that question, Tedford plans to give Kevin Riley and backup Nate Longshore equal first-team repetitions at this week's practices. The practices might decide the competition, because the games haven't allowed for much evaluation.

Well, if things don't work out, you can always use your U.C. Berkeley education to get a REAL job.

Go with Longshore.

Yeah Tedford has been there for awhile and haven't done all that much.

What are you guys TALKING about? Cal had been a perennial Pac-10 cellar dweller for, oh, almost 50 years before Tedford came. The "glory days" of Cal football happened when my grandparents were young, and we haven't been to the Rose Bowl since 1959. The year before Tedford was hired, we went 1-10 and were put on probation due to having a sleazy AD and coach (Holmoe). Tedford has come in here and invigorated a Cal program that hadn't done ANYTHING in decades. He has turned this program into a respected one, and that's fantastic--Tedford has been a great coach for us.

Cal does not have a tradition of football excellence, which means that the school doesn't tend to support football the way they do at schools like USC and Georgia, Ohio State & Michigan. We are getting better, but it's silly to expect that we could win a national championship easily, after decades of losing seasons and a university that doesn't think sports are all that important. Things are changing, gradually, on that--and that is thanks to Tedford and our new AD.

Sorry to blather on, I just felt the need to clarify some things.

I agree with cardassianvole, just because a coach is in a QB situation doesn't mean that he should be put on the hot seat already. This isn't Michigan/USC/Georgia/Ohio State/Florida/Florida State/Miami with overly spoiled fans who whine every time they lose a game, try being a temple football fan tell me how you like it.

Tedford is miles from anything resembling a hot seat. The administration @ Cal just wants a respectable and contending non-doormat football program, as well as one that is above board and clean as a whistle... Tedford did indeed bring Cal out of total obscurity, so he basically has a lifetime pass there, or should

Oh no problem at all, feel free to blather on. Doesn't change the facts though that Cal has accomplished NOTHING outside of the pansy Pac-10
