Who's left to run the ball for Steelers?

The backfield for the Steelers in Jacksonville Sunday night might look a little like your stock portfolio today -- a lot thinner than it was two weeks ago. Help was on the way, though, in the form of veteran running back Najeh Davenport, who signed early yesterday afternoon after a late morning workout. He'll return to the same practice field he frequented the past two seasons when he was the backup to starter Willie Parker. Coach Mike Tomlin would not discuss either back at his news conference yesterday, even when asked directly about Davenport. That leaves Moore, who had one carry for 6 yards and no receptions before Monday night. The veteran, signed by the Steelers as a third-down back in free agency, came through for them in the fourth quarter and overtime to help beat Baltimore, 23-20.

I heard from a friend that there was an ad in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette asking for applications today.

If Najeh Davenport couldnt beat out Carey Davis in camp, hold your nose if he has to share any of the load with Moore.

Those retro uniforms stink.

October 1, 2008  08:21 AM ET

they will get someone, the problem is they cannot protect the QB. And he is no help in getting rid of the ball sooner either. Hate to say it, but the Steelers are going no where this year..

Dare I dream that my Browns will not get torched for 150+ yards rushing their next encounter? I say nay.. Cleveland will find some way to be inept against the run, even against Willie Parker in on crutches or a in a wheel chair.

How much is Shaun Alexander wanting to play these days?

October 1, 2008  09:14 AM ET

Any bum can run the ball.....steelers got o-line problems. U could put jim brown back there & it wouldnt make a difference with the way they're playing now

Call Shaun Alexander. You might as well at least see what he has left. It won't hurt.

October 1, 2008  09:31 AM ET

Agreed, but people forget they've had the O-line problem for the last couple of years.
Faneca got beat many times himself, and was not worth the money he wanted.
They should've spent their first two or three picks on OL-men, rather than one pick in six rounds (fourth). Mendenhall is good, but they could've got a decent RB with their 4th pick.
They picked a WR and LB 2nd and 3rd...don't they have too many LBers? Has Sweed even played a down? I don't think so.

October 1, 2008  09:45 AM ET

What happend to Mendenhall?

October 1, 2008  10:02 AM ET

Mendenhall has a shoulder injury if i'm not mistaken.

October 1, 2008  10:02 AM ET

spaul..I think the problem is a lot deeper than playing talent. They are not very well coached. They do not even know who to block half the time...who knows if they could or not. The Steeler coaching staff may be the biggest problem . That line is not prepared to handel the packages thrown at them....lets be honest here...

October 1, 2008  10:09 AM ET

Lest we forget, Parker should be back soon. However, I think most teams do the Running Back by committee these days. The Steelers need to be more concerned with putting together an O-line that can block for any RB. They have been absolutely shredded. I like Mike Tomlin, cool as a cucumber. The Steelers will remain competitive at home, but i'm not sure about how they'll fare on the road, especially late in the season when playoff spots are on the line. Bye week is week six.

QUOTE(#10):

Steelers are in trouble till Parker returns.................

davenport ave. almost 5 yards per carry last year, had 7 total td'd.
he didn't make the team, because the steelers wanted to save money.
who would expect first and second string backs to go down?
he's better than anyone on the active list.

QUOTE(#13):

What happend to Mendenhall?

Mendenhall broke his shoulder and is out for the year. Ray Lewis did it.......

There's no excuse for that O-line to be as bad as it is at handling pressure and picking up blitzes - especially when you consider that the O-line goes up against the blitz packages of the Steelers defense all week long.

Ben is just gonna have to pass more from the shotgun until the problem gets fixed.

Why don't they have more quick slants?
Have you seen another team as bad as the Steelers throwing screens?
