Will Dodgers bring back GM?
What general manager Ned Colletti won't acknowledge is that he has anxiety about his future with the Dodgers. Colletti was widely presumed to be on shaky ground midway through the season, as newly signed $36.2-million center fielder Andruw Jones lumped himself in with Jason Schmidt and Juan Pierre on the growing list of the GM's questionable high-priced free-agent acquisitions, and his team -- with a $120-million payroll -- trailed Arizona in the standings. However, by the time the Dodgers clinched the division title, owner Frank McCourt was crediting him with making the trades that salvaged the season. Manager Joe Torre agreed, saying it was the acquisitions of Manny Ramirez and Casey Blake in July that put the Dodgers on the path to the playoffs. But McCourt hasn't said whether Colletti will be back next season, the final year of his four-year contract.

Ned Colletti should be on shaky ground. The only reason he still has a job is that he works for the McCourts, who seem to be insane.

Dude deserves a one year extension just for the aquisitions of Ramirez and Blake alone.
The most insane thing about the McCourts is that they will be holding up the National League Championship trophy in a few weeks.

Come on Roy!.... Colletti is the worst GM in the MLB and is widely ridiculed in LA for his failed signings..... and is referred to as "The Parking Lot Attendant" in the LA Times for his incompetence as a GM..... we'll see how his signing of Ramirez plays out.... my prediction: Dodgers go one and done in the playoffs, Ramirez signs elsewhere and the move doesn't look so brilliant anymore..... Kind of like Teixiera in Atlanta.... was great at the time, but the team didn't win and now it's being second guessed as one of the worst Atlanta trades ever......

Andruw Jones needs a return to Atlanta under Bobby Cox to get his career back.

This from FJM, you dope:
I'm going to go ahead and short-circuit this whole line of reasoning right off the top. These were both fine deadline-pick-ups. But the Red Sox were the very definition of desperate. Even when offering to pay the man's entire salary, there were only two teams interested in Manny -- L.A. and Florida, and Florida apparently wanted not the $7m left on his contract, but in fact $9m, the extra $2m ostensibly to sign the draft pick(s) they would get when they offered Manny arbitration at the end of the year, he declined, and they got the compensation pick. Demanding extra cash, on top of the 100% subsidy you are being offered to have one of the greatest RHH in a generation come play for you, seems like the MLB version of extortion to me.
Anyway, the point is, the Dodgers -- on July 31 at like 3:01 PM -- were the only game in town. Now, Coletti deserves credit for being that game, but it's not like he picked up some scrub from the scrap heap because he believed in him, and now that guy is awesome. He traded a few guys for Manny Ramirez. Who's leaving at the end of the year. And yes, it has certainly energized this city, but again...the team is under .500 since the trade.
As for Blake, when he was acquired he had an .830 OPS. He now has an .826 OPS. He had a .303 OBP in August. He's 35.

Ned Colletti has made the playoffs twice in 4 years. He has held onto Billingsly and Kershaw, they will both be studs(when it would have been easy to trade them to improve). He has promoted Logan White who seems to be an ok talent evaluator. There were some bad sigings no doubt, Schmidt and Pierre were terrible but Bradley for Either holding Kemp trading for Manny come on !!!!! Minaya just gets extended through 2012 you have got to be kidding me. I guess because he is in such a tough division so it's ok to lose on the last day of the season every year LOL what a joke. Keep the team in Neds hands and you may see a few championships over the next couple years.

Colletti has done an amazing job given the circumstances he was given. NO ONE could have predicted what a bust Andrew Jones would be. Clearly the roll of the dice on him was approved by McCourt, they limited him to two years because he was coming off a two bad years ( relative to his prior productivity). NO ONE knew that Jason Schmidt was completely F'd up and would be unable to play. Juan Pierre has given us exactly what we thought we were getting and while the dodgers have found better talent for center field, he is as advertized. Look at the load of iunjuries that have hit the dodgers this year:
1 Garciaparra three trips to D.L. , including one 60 day stint
2. LARoche- started season on D.L., never regained any form, had to be traded
3. Furcal -4 months on D.L., herniated disc
4. Jason Schmidt, out for season
5. Jeff kent- torn Miniscus
6. Mark Sweeney- out twice with injuries, worst year of his career, previously best pinch hitter in baseball
7. G. Bennett- Out for the year
8. B. penny- Pitching in pain, and then ostensibly ouyt for the season (tried a comeback, failed miserably)
9 T. Saito- 60 day D.L., still looks shaky
10. A. Jones- out 10 weeks and completely inneffective when "healthy"
This many serious injuries to starting players would have decimated any other team.
Colletti has done a masterful job of filling the void.
1. Blake DeWitt (buried in double AA) and then Casey Blake have been more then adequate at 3rd. DeWitt now looks like the second baseman of the future for the Dodgers.
2. Angel Berroa (former R.O.Y.) picked up for a song and played like star (small s)
3. Pablo Ozuna, no star, but serviceable and steady
4 Danny Ardoin- again, not a star, but a reliable catcher to spell Martin
5 C. Kershaw--Would have been great trade-bait, instead colletti hung on to him, brought him along and now they have a lefty stud who looks very promising for the years ahead
6. A. Either- Reports are Boston wanted him for Manny. Colletti drew the line and worked the deal for LARoche instead..brilliant
7. G. Maddux--not the same stuff he used to have, but a brilliant baseball mind and an awesome teammate---and if you question this look at the team pitching stats prior to his arrival and after his arrival...
8. M. Ramirez- Is the spark that got this powderkeg going. By recognizing his potential to raise the entire teams confidence and approach, Colletti has shown us his coup-de-grace.
This has been an incredible rise this year. It is easy to say Colletti is to blame for the Dodgers not winning a 100 games. What is really tough to admit though, is that without Colletti's patience, faith, and knowledge and skill the Dodgers would have finished last in the division instead of one game away from going to the NL champioship series.
Give up the love folks. I don't love or hate Colletti, but you gotta give him crfedit for some grat moves.
