Belichick denies Davis' tampering charge

Bill Belichick yesterday disputed Raiders owner Al Davis's claim that the Patriots tampered with receiver Randy Moss before acquiring him from Davis's team last year. On Tuesday, following a press conference announcing the firing of Raiders coach Lane Kiffin, Davis had told reporters that the Patriots had a private workout with Moss, and that "they tampered with him," although the Raiders never filed tampering charges. Asked by the Globe about Davis's claims, Belichick said, "I've told the story a hundred times. The first time I talked to Randy was after I talked to Mr. Davis, Saturday night/Sunday morning before the draft, the second day of the draft. I don't know what this workout is. No idea."

Davis can't remember what he had for lunch yesterday let alone what happened more than a year ago. The man is bizarre and lives in his own 'world according to Al'. He is an embarrassment and the NFL should force him to relinquish ownership of the Raiders.

True. He got noodles now, where marbles use to lie dormant.

October 2, 2008  05:53 AM ET

This is stupid. Why did Davis wait till now? It's not like I believe anything that old guy says anyway.

October 2, 2008  05:53 AM ET

Belicheat gets enough trash talk anyway. Leave the Pats alone this season......

October 2, 2008  06:14 AM ET

You may want to work out some of the people you draft before you draft and/or sign them as free agents Al.
I guess there is no test for mental competency in the NFL to own a team.

October 2, 2008  06:53 AM ET

If he did tamper with Moss, Al Davis wasn't forced to trade him there. I'm sure there were a couple other teams who would have given him a 4th RD pick for Randy Moss..

You know you're a piece of lying scum when Belichick is the more believable person in the situation. As a Raiders fan I am more embarrassed and disgusted with every passing hour Al Davis is still in charge. That press conference was pathetic.

October 2, 2008  07:34 AM ET

Wow, how slow does Al Davis' thought process work if this JUST crossed his mind?

October 2, 2008  07:47 AM ET

Tampered with him? What, did they rearrange his sock drawer or something? What the hell does tamper mean?

HAHA, I was thinking the same thing. If a man tried to "tamper" with me theres a good chance I would punch him in the throat

You just know that Goodell and all the owners are just sitting back waiting for Al to die..... since he'll sue anyone that looks sideways at him they can't touch him......dementia has set in though, it won't be long......

My question for those of your ilk..... how are you still a Raider fan with the sideshow this team has become? .... no decent coach will ever coach the Raiders after Davis refused to pay Kiffin..... and the game has passed Davis by..... the Raiders are doomed to be the joke of the league until Al dies..... fans have left for a lot less.....

The Raiders will win again. They have decent pieces on offense with Russell, McFadden, Bush, and Zach Miller looks decent from what I've seen. And the defense wasn't too bad the last 2 years if I'm correct.

EastCoastKeith...i have to admire you. A true fan.. I spent 15 years in the mid sixties to 1981 watching the Giants in total disbelief. Ya just gotta stay with it, and hope you live a long time.. At least longer than the owner....Hey, make it your lifes goal. Not a bad one...Actually, the Raiders are not hopeless. If Kiffin had been allowed to dump that defensive backstabbing incompetent coordinator last winter when he wanted to, your team would be 3-1 now....

October 2, 2008  08:19 AM ET

Why is this coming up now? Al Davis is a JOKE.

October 2, 2008  08:28 AM ET

What a shock....Belichick cheating?

October 2, 2008  08:34 AM ET

I worry about Al......no credibility anymore and borderline dillusional.

October 2, 2008  08:38 AM ET

Wow! Who are we going to believe? They are both liars and unclassy guys. They both have no respect for others. I can't tell the difference. Both can control the commissioner. Both gets away w/ everything.

October 2, 2008  08:41 AM ET

Al is a crazy old fool, but I dont doubt that Billy didn't tamper, but I also think its extremely common, I think most teams talk to guys they pick up early. But once again its still not allowed in the NFL, so once again the Pats are going to look dirty
