Personal fouls cost Trojan starting job

Two personal foul penalties called against USC nose tackle Averell Spicer cost the Trojans dearly in their upset loss against Oregon State. They also cost Spicer his starting job. Spicer was among the defensive linemen who struggled against an Oregon State offensive front that pushed the Trojans off the line of scrimmage and led a 186-yard rushing effort by running back Jacquizz Rodgers. Spicer, a 6-foot-2, 295-pound junior from Rancho Cucamonga, was flagged late in the first half on a third-and-goal play that had resulted in an incomplete pass. Instead of having to kick a field goal, Oregon State was awarded a first down at the three with less than 10 seconds left. "I just lost my head," Spicer said of an exchange with a Beavers lineman. "There were a lot of late hits going on. It's always the second guy that gets caught. I learned that first hand."

Oh Averell you poor thing you were just defending yourself weren't you? boohoo...

October 2, 2008  09:43 AM ET

Good job coach. Shaf, good thing you have your sister to defend you. Make a comment that has merit.

October 2, 2008  10:19 AM ET

Just a Nut case - "Make a comment that has merit." Learn to take a joke! I'm sure you can dish it out, but when it comes back at you take it in stride.

What kind of passing the buck is the coach doing now?..."Coach had a talk with me and said that they can't start me having two personal fouls in a game."..give us all a break..
Yeah, sure, that is why you got beat all day both sides of the ball....I think your team was outcoached, outplayed, and out motivated, and you made no good adjustments to what was happening to you....
Coach, you are not starting coaching this week because you did not have your team prepared.....own up to it...

Classic case of passing the buck. And Spicer just now learned that its always the second guy that gets caught. Come on, they teach you that in pop warner football.

After the way we have dispatched you rodents the last few years we've met in the Rose Bowl, you've got a lot of nerve...

That wasn't "at me "..... it was a lame comment that needed a retort.

October 2, 2008  12:09 PM ET

No problem here... you guys keep looking through those dirty glasses of yours and misreading the content of a T&R. Make sure you take it to the extreme....... He got benched.... I say good. The bile you guys throw out over something like this is just comical.

October 2, 2008  12:09 PM ET

Nice try King......... another miss.

October 2, 2008  12:19 PM ET

He should be benched. Their D-Line got embarassed...who cares about the penalties his play doesn't deserve a starting role

October 2, 2008  12:27 PM ET

Classy move Pete, put the blame on the kid by benching him.

October 2, 2008  12:51 PM ET

Blame? Where do you get that? He made two bonehead fouls....bench him.

October 2, 2008  12:53 PM ET

Allowing Oregon State to score 21 points in the first half cost the trojans the game not the penalties. Pete needs to stop passing the buck and realize that they had a great game plan against Ohio State but not against the Beavers.

Get off the crack 50! Why question the best coach in college football?!?

Fight On!

Saban might argue with you on that.

October 2, 2008  01:05 PM ET

Saban should after the success he has had so far.

You didn't watch the game, eh?

One of his penalties lead to some of those points, directly. So, yeah, 15 yard penalties on incomplete passes on 3rd down are a big deal. It's not a game plan issue or coaching issue. That's a player issue.

When one player makes too many mistakes, you bench them and play someone who is likely to make less mistakes. That's how position charts work. Coaches shift those charts based on their analysis of how a player is playing. That's what coaching is all about.

The game plan wasn't an issue. After watching the game a second time, it was clearly more an issue of assignment football mistakes. You can't miss blocks and gaps and expect to win against a motivated team playing excellent football.

As for Saban, he is definitely showing why he had no business in the NFL. College football is his thing. If he can pull off a NCG this year, he will make a strong argument for the "best" college coach.
