Padres open to offers for Peavy

Coming off a 99-defeat season, Padres General Manager Kevin Towers said Tuesday he considers no player "untouchable" and will find out the trade value of every player. Towers, speaking last Wednesday from Los Angeles, also said Padres ace Jake Peavy will not be exempted from his offseason fact-finding mission and that he would be shirking his duties if he did not find out Peavy's value on the trade market. "Are we going to shop Jake Peavy? No," Towers said. "It's a time of year to gather information. If it's something that makes sense, you've got to talk as an organization."

Lets put him, Ben Sheets, Carl Pavano, and Kerry Wood in a slowboat to China. As we all know, none will make it alive. Just because.

But..but....Carl Pavano is healthy now!

I don't think you can put Peavy in the injury category of the other 3 you mention. His issues haven't been as chronic and on-going.

Oh, but I will.

We'll take him. What do you want San Diego?

Put them together you might get the services of one actual pitcher, then again maybe not.

I'm sure you will.........but you need to have Mark Prior driving the boat.....

No doubt. How about Anderson, Rasmus and Pineiro for Peavy?

October 2, 2008  10:33 AM ET

The only injury i remember him having is his rib got broke when he got knocked around by his teamates celebrating their going to the playoffs....like 2 seasons ago. What else has he had wrong? He's a dominate pitcher and i wouldnt mind if he were on my team...even though it has to be pretty embarassing to get hurt on go on the DL for that reason.

Can he do it on a lake in Cleveland near a pier?

Or you get the 2007 Cy Young winner, but I guess he sucks.

Shouldnt there be a Yankee fan chiming in and saying how the Yankees are going to get this guy.

October 2, 2008  11:23 AM ET

I dont think they will try. If he were a free agent...then yes...the Yankees would probably throw their hat in the ring, but I dont see them trading anything for him. If they didnt make the trade for Johan or CC...then they wont for Peavy. They will simply put cash up for the best FA pitchers since there are a few this offseason. If they do make a trade...it will be for someone less impressive so they only have to give up moderate minor league talent. Oh, but who the heck knows...its the Yankees and they need to stir the pot and place a good product on the field of their new digs this year.

Yeah Yanks are high on everyone in their farm system and if they didn't trade them for CC or Santana odds are they won't deal them for Peavy. Yanks are just going to bombard the FA market with so much money it is going to be a joke. This might be one of those years that we look back on 10 years from now and say wow that is when players salaries really jumped.

October 2, 2008  11:31 AM ET

Ouch, that's not good! He had a great year...his team just sucked beyond and did not give him ANY run support. He's one of the best pitchers in baseball, but on a crap team this year. Re-build the team around Peavy. Bring in a another solid pitcher and a few bats! I'm not a padres fan, but this team had a winning record in 07 with just about the same team/players.

October 2, 2008  11:31 AM ET

I agree, I think the Yankees will go after CC first and secondarily they'll go after Burnett. I don't think they'll trade for a top tier guy like Peavy

October 2, 2008  11:35 AM ET

Here's another Cardinals fan who would like to see what else (in addition to Rasmus) the Padres would want in exchange for Peavy.

I think the Yanks will go after CC and only try for Burnett if they fail to sign CC. They do have back up plans in Moose and Pettitte if they can't sign anyone but I don't see them trading for starting pitching when they have a lot of it in their farm system (not saying they are good but they do have a lot of warm bodies they can send out to the mound). Yanks also are said to be big players in the Teixeira sweepstakes as they will need a 1b (a real one this time). Aside from CC/Burnett and Teixeira I don't see the Yankees making any other big free agent splashes unless they just want to spend money and try to sign K Rod for no reason.

We'd probably have to switch one of the young pitchers for Pineiro. I'd love that trade. Peavy in a dominate pitcher who is still quite young.
