Agent: K-Rod wants at least $75M

Record-breaking Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez is seeking at least $75 million over five years, agent Paul Kinzer said Wednesday. K-Rod wants "at least" five years at "Mariano money," according to Kinzer, who called that price the "baseline" to get into the ballgame for the All-Star closer who set the single-season saves record this season. Kinzer made clear, however, that his client was hoping for even more. The agent declined to name a top target price. The Angels are expected to be joined in the derby by the Mets, who presumably have lost closer Billy Wagner for 2009 with an elbow injury that necessitated Tommy John surgery. Several other teams have been mentioned as being interested, including the Cardinals and Indians. But the steep price may limit the serious suitors to big-market teams. Some baseball people believe K-Rod more easily envisions himself in a big city, anyway.

The Cardinals had more than 30 blown saves this year. Had they held onto half of those leads, the Cardinals would have been in the playoffs as the wildcard. That certainly would have been worth $25 million... especially if you get to remove Jason Isringhausen's $8.75 million from the payroll like they get to next season now that Izzy's contract is up.

**** ridiculous. now so called big time closers who pitch usually one or less innings are going to get starter money? time to go back to pitching every fourth day and four man rotations and stretching those arms out to pitch complete games.

I'd rather save that money and put it towards CC then give it to a closer.

October 3, 2008  07:26 AM ET

Timing, Location, and Money. Always the same. Offering starter salaries for relievers is completely insane.

October 3, 2008  08:08 AM ET

Wow that a lot of money for a closer, but maybe some crazy team might give him that money it still to much for a closer even if you are a great closer. With $75M I would be set for life, man I think I pick the wrong profession.

I'd say I agree with you, but a team like the mets, with an awful bullpen, need a closer more than they need another ace starter. Although i agree having CC and Johan in the same starting rotation would be ridiculous, they wouldnt have a capable closer, let alone middle relievers, to finish games out. while in an ideal baseball world, a complete game wouldnt be abnormal, baseball just isn't played that way these days. a strong bullpen, especially a closer, is essential, and the mets, or other similarly bullpen-starved teams that have strong starting pitching, would be smarter to go after k-rod than cc. Personally, I would love to see CC come to the phillies, seeing as how i'm a diehard phils fan, but that wont happen...i think the phils will go for another bullpen arm or two, and maybe a new catcher or third baseman...we're all defense and no offense at those positions...i wish we could find some players that bring both. some more bench depth would be fantastic as well. sorry this turned into a phillies rant, that tends to happen with me.

October 3, 2008  08:25 AM ET

As badly as the Mets need a closer, I can't give a reliever $75 million or a 5 year contract....And with the Yankees and Red Sox out of the picture, who's going to pay this much?

October 3, 2008  08:27 AM ET

He's over rated...in every pitching statistic but one SAVES....it sure didn't hurt his team won 90+ games and put him in a position to get that many saves. There are about 4-5 better arms out there for less.

October 3, 2008  08:31 AM ET

The mets dodgers philly atlanta the angels ? We will see but man that's alot of dough. $ 15 Mil a year? Mo Money? Major league ball players are NOT main street. I say give it to him. On the condition he set up a 50% tax, 35% to the government (before write offs and deductions) and 15% to go directly to the starving children of appalachia. How many kids can he feed on $ 2.25 Mil a year? I'm a capitalist, but this overpayment for baseball players, not only K Rod, is rediculous. Just think how people will really love our heroes then. I know there are many foundations set up by players, America needs more! Go K Rod!

October 3, 2008  08:38 AM ET

K-Rod may think he deserves Mariano money, but there's no debate as to who the better closer is. That said, its very likely that some dumb team (like the Mets) shells out $15 million + to land this guy.

October 3, 2008  08:56 AM ET

No way you give him a 5 year deal.
he hasn't even pitched 75 innings this year.

October 3, 2008  09:22 AM ET

He wants 75 Million? Call the US Senate and they will give him the handout.

October 3, 2008  09:32 AM ET

there is NO way he will get it, he needs to stop living in his dream world and stop smoking weed.. I don't think there is a team out their that is going to give him that kind of money, and if they do they must be smoking the same thing he is.

October 3, 2008  09:55 AM ET

He could help a lot of teams, including the Cardinals......but if anyone gives him 5 years and $75 Million......they'll end up regretting it.

October 3, 2008  09:59 AM ET

No Closer deserves that much money. i think Mo is overpaid at 15 per, not that i lose any sleep over it, in this case I think Mo's payment for past and future services, retiring a Yankee and all the Hall stuff has poisoned K-Rods, and perhaps the leagues view of what a closer should make.

October 3, 2008  10:00 AM ET

That Said I think that Minaya needs to seriously consider paying this guy.

October 3, 2008  10:15 AM ET

That kind of money for someone who throws three innings a week is ridiculous. The "save" is the most overrated statistic in sports. Besides, this guy is a punk. All of his antics at the end of a game he "saves" is ridiculous. You would think he just found a cure for cancer. I'm surprised someone hasn't taken a Louisville Slugger to his melon.

October 3, 2008  10:16 AM ET

We all know the Mets need bullpen help, but I wish the Braves would spend some money for once.
