MLB plans 24/7 television network

Major League Baseball does not believe there is enough baseball on television. Not on local and regional TV. Not on Fox, ESPN, TBS or MLB.com. It wants ubiquity, a 24/7 home, so it is building its own cable channel, the MLB Network, in Secaucus, N.J., with opening day scheduled for Jan. 1. The idea behind a league-owned network is not new. The N.F.L., the N.B.A. and the N.H.L. preceded baseball, but all share a goal: to feed a rabid fan base and to relentlessly promote their sport.

With 24/7 baseball on TV, when am I going to find time to make stupid comments on FanNation??

Well It's a good plan for the MLB to update to the rest of major league sports like NBA and the NFL that have there on 24/7 network, so it would be smart to catch up rest of sports. Now the only thing now is why we can't get these networks for free, I pay extra money for the NFL network it is crazy. And forget having the NBA network to with out paying out your pockets for the people who can't afford it. I hope I don't have to pay extra for MLB network, I like sports but I like not being broke too.

Who's gonna watch my kid??

October 3, 2008  09:36 AM ET

well since ESPN doesn't give any other team but the red sox time on their programs its about time.. i for one any all of it..

Great, another Red Sox/Yankees network. Who cares!!!!!!!!!

I will not pay extra for it but I am glad that MLB is throwing its hat into the ring. It was pretty sad last week when you had several teams fighting for playoff spots and despite contracts with Fox, ESPN and TBS none of the games were available for me to watch.

Sounds good to me! However, as mentioned already...spare us w/ a red sox/yankees recap every 1/2 hour.

I share your concerns :(

Cool! I finally get to see out of market games.

This is not news. When the new TV deal was reached with DirecTV and cable in 2007, the MLB Network was a sticking point. We knew it was coming a year and a half ago.

They better do a better job then the NFL has done.

What a joke.

They black out local channels, paid MLB extra Inning channels, paid mlb.com subscriptions. Now they want to launch their own Channel.

Mlb is so greedy.

When is baseball going to stop being so greedy? We pay over $200 for the MLB package, games are blacked out, we get no high definition games on cable. Unbelievable how MLB has no problem paying players $20 million a year but piss on the fans who pay all the money who fund everything.

We live 6 hours from Miami where the Marlins play, yet all games are blacked out on any regular local channel as well as the $200 mlb package we pay so we can actually watch Mets games when they play the Marlins but still get blacked out.

This year we will not buy the package and not spend any money on any merchandise or tickets. Nothing.

The economy is bad yet baseball apparently thinks they are above and beyond being touched by the downturn. They have no problem blacking out fans and charging outragious prices for everything and then putting out their hand for tax payers to build them new stadiums. If we can't see what we pay for then why even bother.
