NHL to monitor Leafs-Ducks deals

It seems the National Hockey League has their eyes on the Anaheim Ducks and Toronto Maple Leafs. According to the Globe and Mail, the league will look closely at any deals made between the two teams as rumors persist that Ducks' general manager Brian Burke may leave Anaheim at season's end to take over the reins in Toronto. Last week, the Ducks traded Mathieu Schneider to the Atlanta Thrashers in an effort to clear salary cap space for the signing of Teemu Selanne. Sources told TSN the Maple Leafs made a strong pitch to acquire Schneider as part of a package that included Bobby Ryan, a prospect Burke drafted second overall behind Sidney Crosby in 2005. In an interview with The Sporting News, Burke was asked if he felt a trade between the two teams would represent a conflict of interest and he replied concisely. "All the discussions with Toronto are done by (senior vice-president of hockey operations) Bob Murray," Burke told The Sporting News. "There are no issues there." This claim was corroborated to the Globe and Mail by Leafs general manager Cliff Fletcher, who confirmed his interest in Ryan to the newspaper.

Like Bettman would do anything to upset Burke.

NHL's version of "spygate"......stay tuned.

Nothing like trading the best young prospects from your current team to the one you will most likely take over. Hmmmmm suspicious? I can just pictue Chief Wiggam from the Simpsons saying "Move along people...nothing to see here."

For some reason, it just makes me sick to see him carrying the Cup.

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, walks like a duck and cr@ps like a duck, ..... it's ..... Bryan Burke!

I'd keep a very close eye on him too! It's too cozy and convenient for my liking!

I cant picture why he would want to leave a really good team like the Ducks to go to the cluster **** they got in Toronto at the moment. Unless he thinks he can right the ship. Could it be he craves the headlines of Toronto to Anaheim.

It makes sense. I have kinda wondered about this. If you have a good team in one city, but there is a good chance that you will move to another city in the near future, of course you will try and make trades with that team. It handicaps the city you leave behind, and it makes you look good when you get to the new city. All the same though, the NHL really shouldn't monitor this until after it happens, should it? Although we know that Burkey will be there eventually, there aren't any guarantees in life. It just seems a little weird that they would be monitoring a "what-if" situation.

Also, if it's a foregone, shouldn't the NHL be looking into tampering on the Leafs' part?

They probably should wtn but wont.

Getzlaf and Perry to the Leafs for a 4th round draft pick.

This is nonsense on the league's part. Lets say he does make a questionable deal, sending players to toronto under the impression he's going to take over next year, wouldn't that kill him credibility and reputation wise around the league? GM's are a small club and if one tries to be rogue at another's expense, they are black balled (see Kevin Lowe, who conveniently was bumped upstairs by the Oilers). The league colluded for years against Group II FA's, and that was GM's saying I'll leave your guys alone and you stay away from mine. Burke is an ego maniac and he'd like nothing more than to be the GM who brings a cup to Toronto. And in all fairness if he did, he'd be God in this city hands down, kind of like Epstein in Boston.

I believe that the owners would automatically get involved in any deal between these two anyway. So the midget getting involved means nothing (much like anything else he does).

Burke's midget friend BEttman will close his eyes on a few deals...

Maybe Bettman and Burke should just get it out in the open and announce their love for each other.
