Davis-Kiffin feud doesn't faze JaMarcus

For a 23-year-old guy who has started just five games in the NFL, JaMarcus Russell is remarkably cool under fire. This can't be easy for a youngster. A couple of days earlier, the team's owner said the former head coach hadn't wanted to take Russell with the top pick in the 2007 draft. The Raiders quarterback said Thursday he and Lane Kiffin had a great relationship. As for owner Al Davis' contention during his Tuesday news conference that Kiffin wanted to take somebody else, he said, "It just kind of came out of nowhere. I really don't think myself, or coach Kiffin, or anybody else were looking for that to come out that way. I appreciate the opportunity he gave me to play in the National Football League," he said. He hopes Kiffin lands another coaching job soon "because he's a good guy, a good coach." On that point, of course, he disagrees with Davis, who called Kiffin a "liar" repeatedly during the news conference. Davis said Kiffin had advised him a week before the draft against drafting Russell, preferring - according to Davis - to take quarterback Brady Quinn or wide receiver Calvin Johnson or to trade the pick.

Good - it shouldn't faze him at all. Just get out there and continue to learn and try to win some football games.

JR keep playing football the way you have been, even like you did back in your LSU days. You, and Darren just play the way yall know how to. JR is a whole lot better than Quinn would ever be. Now, would of been sweet if they drafted CJ with JR. Davis needs to shut up before he throws his team in the dump. Oakland has tuns of talent just needs to be directed in a better offensive way. Geaux Russell.

Big ups to JaMarcus, I think he was a class act the way he has handled this situation.

He knows who signs his pay check

that doesnt have anything to do with the fact that the guy cant play

Who Lane Kiffin, or Al Davis which one? Because I know you are not talking about JR. What a rantard.

Russell can't play?? I think he's doing fine with those inept WRs he's throwing to. Not even a hybrid Marino-Montana could do much better.

I like the way Russell is handling this. He needs to become the leader of the team and this will only help him. He didn't shy away from it, but also didn't dig himself a hole either.

Nice job Russell, this isn't an easy thing to deal with. Just learn the game and wait for the team to get better around you.

I wouldn't believe anything Al Davis has to say.

October 4, 2008  07:32 AM ET

im a raiders fan, but sheesh al davis needs some help in the office, or maybe he should sell the team and let someone younger with more wits run the team. Until that happens its going to be a long wait, can you say #1 pick next year LMAO!!!!!!!!

October 4, 2008  10:11 AM ET

Can you say #3 or 4 pick next year? As bad as the Raiders suck (I love Al Davis), there are teams in the league who are actually worse.

Go Broncos.

Outside of Wide Receiver, Oakland has a decent team. Davis is responsible for the draft and trades that got it there. He's poor at picking coaches. Everyone complains about the coaching carousel, but would Oakland be better off with several years of Bill Callahan (Destroyed Nebraska), Art Shell (come on... seriously), Norv Turner (destroying San Diego. Bet they'd love some Martyball right about now) or Lane Kiffin (Was looking for a new job in the offseason with Arkansas.) Certainly he needs to find a good one and stick with him, but I can't say as I'm overly unhappy with him turfing any of those four.

yeh, its obvious that "it doesn't faze russell. He is not even fazed by losing. he needs 2-3 more years on the bench as backup. he is not ready to be a starting QB yet. maybe never.
