Yankees, Pirates deny trade talk

Decision makers in The Bronx and Pittsburgh said yesterday there was nothing to the Yankees acquiring outfielder Nate McLouth from the Pirates - yet. "We haven't talked about it, it's premature," a Yankees source said. "Haven't heard a word about that," a Pirates source said. Pirates GM Neal Huntington has declared nobody is untouchable, and the Pirates are looking to upgrade a poor minor league system and major league talent base, so McLouth's name has been tossed around. The Yankees are in the market for a center fielder.

overall decent numbers. hit .281 with RISP. Situational hitting was up and down. LIke man on ssecond he sucked but with bases loaded he ruled. Also was a good hitter with men on and two outs. worth looking at and asking what they want i guess.

Nate has a lot of potential and like many Pirates, would benefit from having real hitters around them. If Neal is going to make a trade, he better get something damn good in return.

October 3, 2008  08:39 AM ET

He had 26 taters and 23 steals, nice player, and yes LGP, his average may go up in the NY line up. Something for them to think about and what they want in return...

I say the Pirates just field a team of cardboard cutouts next year, and trade away all of their players as they come up from AAA. Much more efficient, and they might see a slight uptick in their win/loss record.

October 3, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Not sure why we constantly try and purge AWFUL teams.....
yeah he may be a nice player- but the pirates SUCK
haven't we learned that stats aren't as important as results.
His whole career has been about LOSING.
I am not saying it's all his fault, but look at the bottom line

Give them melky, Cano, and Kennedy...

October 3, 2008  09:45 AM ET

That would be a nice pickup for the Yanks depending on what the Pirates want in return. He would fit in well.

I thought they were already doing that.

i agree this guy can play. i kept looking for a 2nd half drop off but he held up pretty well. if they're not wanting too much he'd be a good pickup. as far as coming from a losing organization it doesn't matter too much they're not going to ask him to lead the team or anything just expecting to do what he did in pitt this past season.

You may be right ... nobody has actually walked out onto the field and poked those guys in quite a while ...

October 3, 2008  10:09 AM ET

Agreed; I'd give up Melky and Kennedy only.

Agreed hold Cano. Melky and Kennedy is fine but keep Cano.

Why Kennedy and not Hughes? Is that not six of one and half a dozen of the other?

October 3, 2008  10:17 AM ET

Hughes' stuff is good, we have yet to see it translate to a full season, or this year...almost at all, but his stuff is good.

One could say the same of Kennedy.

Nah...Kennedy has shown again and again that even when healthy, he's not ready for prime time. Hughes has shown glimpses of being a very good major league pitcher.

October 3, 2008  10:26 AM ET

Not that I'd be surprised to see Kennedy turn into an ace in Pittsburgh. He may have Can'tPitchInNY-itis.

hire Hudson and get rid of Cano but not to Pitt because Pitt wnats to get young short term contracts and/or restock their minor leagues that are even more barren than the Yankee's minor leagues.
