Braves plan to keep Smoltz, Glavine, Hampton

Braves general manager Frank Wren had it right this season regarding his vision for baseball fossils John Smoltz and Tom Glavine. It's just that the injury gods couldn't care less about vision. Even so, despite their ongoing aches and pains, those baseball fossils are in Wren's new vision, but only in a smaller way, which means he still has it right. Wren's new vision is like this: He is approaching 2009 with the mindset of acquiring a couple of pitching aces from elsewhere to anchor the Braves' starting rotation. Still, he is keeping Smoltz (recovering from shoulder surgery at 41), Glavine (a free agent recovering from elbow and shoulder surgeries at 42), Hampton (always recovering from something) and Hudson in the mix until their arms show signs of snapping from their bodies.

With the need for mid-relievers and the occasional closer, why not?????????

October 3, 2008  08:22 AM ET

Are they going to accept middle reliever money?

October 3, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Good lord. Couldn't they just freeze thier heads and display them in the owner's box? It'll do about the same good for the team, and it's likely to be less expensive ...

WHY???

October 3, 2008  09:55 AM ET

Acquiring a couple of pitching aces from elsewhere?
If only iot were that easy.

October 3, 2008  09:57 AM ET

Do they get some kind of AARP discount for employing all of those guys?

Suck it up Atlanta, let the old fossils go(your manager included) and start to rebuild with some young talent!

The jury is still out on Hampton, but Smoltz and Glavine should be alright for one more year (if they get healthy in the off-season). Hudson will be fine. If Wren can get the two solid pitchers and the one power hitter that he wants, they could definitely be in the mix. Getting everything that he wants is another matter altogether.

Of course, if Glavine and Smoltz started 'roiding up like Clemens and Pettite, the Braves could get another five or six years out of them...

Al Davis is not the only one going senile...what is GM smokin

With decisions like that the league may start drug testing GM's

Guys.... no decisions have been made..... Smoltz and Glavine live in Atlanta and prefer to stay in Atlanta..... and they will not get top money coming off injuries..... so you could pick them up with incentive laden contracts..... if they don't perform, you don't lose much..... Wren is still waiting to see whether they will be medically OK before he signs them..... Wren also made a point that he wouldn't be counting on any of them as they did (unfortunately) this year..... seems like a smart thing to add them into the mix with smaller contracts.....

Exactly. I don't think Wren was ever implying that Smoltz and Glavine were going to be the 1 and 2 starters. Even at their age, even coming off injuries, they can both contribute in a 3/4 or 4/5 role - providing that they can stay healty.

Besides, if they don't plan on retiring, you have to keep them just out of respect for what they have done for Atlanta. That's no way to win championships, I suppose.

Mike Hampton is the most worthless MLB pitcher in history. He has pitched as many games as me in the last 3 years and he makes $15M a year. Maybe he won some new Georgia Lotto game I haven't heard about yet. Hampton is the reason that MLB shouldn't give guaranteed money to pitches, like the NFL does with all its player. Too high risk.

Is Frank Wren stuck in 1998?!?

October 3, 2008  01:51 PM ET

I found it pretty ironic that the year Glavine made his triumphant return to da' ATL also turned out to be the year that he missed significant playing time. Oh well, as a fan of Crimson Tide football I've grown accustomed to waiting on next year...*sigh*

Maybe they can talk Maddux into coming back.....

That's funny. But you know what, if they aren't going to make the postseason anyway, I'd rather bring back all of the hey-day players for the sake of nostalgia. Avery, Justice, Gant. Someone get me Dale Murphy's number...

they've earned the right 2 future hall of famers.....hampton is the only one that i wouldnt want back!!!!!!!

October 3, 2008  03:01 PM ET

I heard that Minnie Minoso, and Sandy Koufax are looking to sign on as Free Agents.

my thought as well -- although I have concerns on Hudson.
It's the National league, so Glavine is still "serviceable" even at 85-90%... It wasn't long ago that Smoltz was still stud-material... great work ethic, too... he'll be back. Hampton is garbage.
