With a 1-3 record and facing a potentially perilous October schedule, Tennessee Coach Phillip Fulmer on Friday named Nick Stephens as the starting quarterback for today's game against Northern Illinois. The sophomore replaces junior Jonathan Crompton, who started the first four games. Fulmer made the announcement following the team's walkthrough at Neyland Stadium.

Well, if you're going to make a bold move like this, Northern Illinois is the perfect patsy to try it against.

The Vols just suck.

UMASS is a heck of a great program too!

Dozer has it exactly right... The Vols are clearly the most over-rated team in the SEC year after year...

This is Fulmer's best shot at trying to make it look like a 1-3 record is not his fault. Be a man, Fulmer. Take credit where it is due.

Tennessee's talent isn't overrated. They have a team that should be able to compete in the SEC. (They won the East last year and almost beat LSU in the championship game.) The problem is with leadership and developing the talent and THAT is a problem with the coaching.

Well their offense couldn't really get much worse, so they might as well try it. I watched the TN-AU game last week and it was pretty ugly...this other dude can't do much worse than Crompton. Maybe this will save their season

I'm sorry? We lost a nail biter to LSU in the SEC title game last season and clobbered Georgia, the team everyone was saying was the best team of the second half yet we are over rated every year? Crimson Tex, Bama has sucked for 10 years so you have no room to talk. Granted that is likely the road the Vols are about to go down, but dont get all high and mighty b/c your team is on a roll this year and ours is down. Our season is over, btw. We might beat Wyoming and will knock off at least one SEC school, but that's it.

TNChrisH--

Good points all. I do think it is time for Fulmer to go, though--although inarguably a terrific recruiter (or at least he heads a great recruiting staff), in the games I've seen over the last couple of years it seems to me he's out-coached on a fairly regular basis. That said, I think this might just be one of those down year or two times that every program goes through.

Phil looks like his immodium isn't working.

Oh don't sell your team short! :-)

I think Phil has popped all but 1 of his banjo strings in Tennessee. He loses to Wyoming, he's off to the Sunbelt Conference.
