Struggling Marlins could deal Willis

Although Dontrelle Willis will attract attention from teams looking to bolster their pitching, the Marlins historically haven't traded away their best young arms. But with Willis making $6.7 million this year and arbitration eligible again next year, the front office could be tempted to make a deal if the team continues to struggle.

Yankee bound????

June 20, 2007  10:13 AM ET

Sold.

June 20, 2007  10:48 AM ET

Gee All Starz, you aren't a little excited about the prospect of him being in Yankee pinstripes are you?? I honeslty think he would be a good fit, even though I HATE THE YANKEES!! Sorry, I'm an Indians fan, we have to hate you guys. Not as much as RedSox fans, but close.

June 20, 2007  10:53 AM ET

Be prepared to give up Hughes and others for him.

June 20, 2007  11:13 AM ET

I sense that $teinbrenner has already ordered pinstripe shirts with 'Willis' on the back..... and as usual, the yanks will give up a coupla AA pitching prospects to get him -- Florida doesn't want any major-leaguers in return, cuz they'll command huge salaries too soon....

June 20, 2007  11:21 AM ET

I don't think we need him to win this year. I wouldn't give up Hughes or a couple of other minor league position players, but they can have a couple of the other pitching prospects.
The way I read the story it is a salary dump. 6-7 mill, compared to what some of our other pitchers make? For Willis? Sold, simple. Now can he play in NY? I've seen plenty of pitchers who couldn't over the past 7 years.

June 20, 2007  11:25 AM ET

If the Yankees can get WIllis without giving up Hughes then that'd be a **** steal and the Marlins should be kicked out of the league.

June 20, 2007  11:32 AM ET

you darn yankee fans! your farm system doesnt have what the marlins want! willis will go to the braves cause theyll offer saltalamacchia plus a pitching prospect (a better one than any the yankees have) and maybe even a young outfield prospect which the marlins will bite and my team will dominate the mets and move back to our rightful place first place! and then we will win the world series and laugh all the way to the bank cause he will wanna stay with us for a long time and we will keep winning for a long time. get used to losing yankee fans the yankees are dead.

June 20, 2007  11:48 AM ET

If the Yanks want him....expect to give up Hughes. If the Mets want him, expect to give up some combination of Gomez / F. Martinez / Pelfrey / Milledge. There are some teams with deep farm systems that could blow those offers off the table (well, not Hughes, but I dont think hes moving), especially considering the Marlins arent in much of a rush to help the Mets or Yanks.

June 20, 2007  12:07 PM ET

i see him goin to the Mets, before the Yankees.

June 20, 2007  12:17 PM ET

I can't see giving up Hughes. Of coarse they want Hughes, everyone wants Hughes. The Yankees want Hughes.
I don't think he is going to the Yankees, the need is just not that great to give up what the Marlins probably want.

June 20, 2007  12:18 PM ET

willis is overrated

June 20, 2007  12:23 PM ET

Hes not going anywhere.

June 20, 2007  12:30 PM ET

Just to throw it out there. Willis to the Sox. Curt hasnt been looking too good of late. We also have a good farm system ,it would be just a matter of who the marlins want.

June 20, 2007  12:34 PM ET

The Sox could make it happen but I'm not sure if I'd want them to.

NL pitcher moving to the AL is always scary.

June 20, 2007  12:34 PM ET

Especially when they'll want Lester, Delcarman/Hansen and whoever.

June 20, 2007  12:42 PM ET

First, why would the Yankees give up Hughes? Not gonna happen. That's just crazy talk... unless, of course, Brian Cashman starts smoking crack.

Second, why would the Marlins give up Willis? That team can actually win if they had a good manager and maybe 1-2 solid leader-type veterans. I'd go out and get a stud pitching coach before giving up a young, talented lefty starter. Oliver Perez is a prime example of an organization giving up on young, proven talent too quickly.

...Although, if Omar Minaya can pull another coup and get Willis, I say go for it!!

June 20, 2007  12:58 PM ET

Willis to an AL team is a bad idea, he's the best hitting pitcher in the Majors. That would be cutting away a good deal of his value.

June 20, 2007  12:58 PM ET

Gets-by-buckner-86.........thats just cruel

June 20, 2007  01:00 PM ET

I think giving up Hanson and Delcarmen might be worth it maybe we can get them to take Pinero too..lol.....we have Bucholz Lester etc still
