Kent unhappy on Dodgers bench

Jeff Kent isn't happy, or comfortable, in his role on the Dodgers' bench, but he isn't making a big deal about it. He underwent knee surgery at the end of August, fought to be ready at the end of September, played in four late games, collected four hits, a home run, a run batted in, and a private meeting with Manager Joe Torre. Who told Kent he was benching him for the postseason. "He could go out there," Torre says. "But I think he'd be better off the bench." Torre doesn't hide the fact that it's not only about the knee, it's about the range. At second base, rookie Blake DeWitt covers more ground. In the postseason, Torre wants to back his ground-ball pitchers with a glove, not a bat.

Kent is a proven jerk.

Last time I checked Jeff Kent does not have a world series ring. Joe Torre has how many? Jeff should shut up and be glad that his team is in the post season with a good chance of sweeping the Cubs and going on to play Philly.

Absolutely!!! Love the bums, but he is a wound in the clubhouse that needs to be removed. He may play well, but his attitude is a menace. Manny needs to knock him out then show him how to swing a bat.

Kent is a streak hitter and when he is not in a streak he is a libility at the plate and in the field. He is slow and I hope the Dodgers do not bring him back next year.

Kent could probably help with the bat, but if his range is that limited, they are betteroff with DeWitt out there

im tired of jeff kent....he's been the power hitter of this team for the past couple years, but now that manny is here...eithier is stepping up...kemp is developing a long ball...he needs to shut up. he was crying earlier when manny was acquired because the media was saying manny made him a better hitter...and he wanted to let everyone know that he's always been a good hitter. **** jeff. get behind your team...or get out! GO DODGERS!

With you there, I can't imagine the guys on the bench are too happy either!

It would be nice if you printed the whole article. This gives a limited picture of how Jeff Kent is actually behaving, and the headline is misleading. Rumors indeed. http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb/dodgers/la-sp-plaschke4-2008oct 04,0,6851579.column

Did you people even read the article?

October 4, 2008  04:38 PM ET

As a Houstonian who suffered through the Jeff Kent show in Houston and then moved to Los Angeles and has really enjoyed watching Kent out here with the Dodgers, I can tell you that it feels like not only has he softened a bit, but he's also somebody a lot of the team looks up to - particularly DeWitt (such a great, instant every day player) and Casey Blake. And for his deficiencies in the field, Kent is a clutch guy. I don't know how many times I've seen him come up and hit a double, get an RBI and turn things around. It takes a certain kind of player to decide to be the guy who becomes #1 in doubles instead of swinging for the fences every time. It's bizarre for me to say as I once hated the guy, but he's really earned my respect here in L.A.

just another crying baseball player. THERES NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!!!

October 4, 2008  07:48 PM ET

Torre and Dodgers are WINNING who cares what Kent Likes...Sit your **** down pass the water bottle around

October 4, 2008  08:54 PM ET

while Kent was out during the season they were playing there best baseball, went into first place and kept it. i loved watching him pout on the bench the other night when they zoomed in on him like a little baby. Torre knows how to manage in the postseason so if Kent wants a ring on his finger he should proudly sit down and shutup.

man kent is still in the league? what is the life expectancy of a jerk?

October 5, 2008  01:52 AM ET

Kent lives in a perpetual state of unhappiness. He's been that way since he was a small child.

October 5, 2008  02:22 AM ET

Kent didn't do **** all season, till Manny came in...and that didn't last long either. SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP.

October 5, 2008  05:37 AM ET

i hope kent will not make any antics that will desturb the flow of the dodgers right now they are in NLCS so he better support his team rather than complaining maybe it will him to win his ring if do it...

"Jeff Kent isn't happy, or comfortable, in his role on the Dodgers' bench, BUT HE ISN'T MAKING A BIG DEAL ABOUT IT."

Most of you Kent bashers write as if he was your next-door neighbor and you know him intimately.

The one y'all ought to be dissing is the T&R editor who posts this piecemeal garbage to stir up some nonsense and make his pathetic little mark in cyberspace.

Those of you who swallow his bait--to paraphrase one of the posters here, must "live in a perpetual state of unhappiness...[and have]been that way since [you were] small child[ren]."
