Cal QB competition not settled
Fifth-year senior Nate Longshore made his first start of the season, replacing sophomore Kevin Riley and sparking a slow-starting offense by leading Cal to a 17-0 lead in its 24-14 win over Arizona State on Saturday. Longshore's 17-of-28 performance for 198 yards and three touchdowns didn't put an end to the quarterback controversy that has been swirling since Riley won the Armed Forces Bowl last season. "You guys create the controversy; I don't create the controversy," coach Jeff Tedford said. "We just put in there who we think gives us the best chance to win, and I'm not saying it can't be Kevin. I'm just saying that there are certain things that we watch and evaluate to make decisions." Tedford said Longshore will "probably" start Oct. 18 at Arizona, but he wouldn't rule out Riley, who is 62-of-109 for 735 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception.

I also am guilty of dropping a couple of bombs in the Fulmer post a page back. I should stop, but it is difficult.............and far too funny to pass by.

Haha, I love how no one cares about this story. But Cal has always played best under the radar (see last year). Cal is a solid program, considering what they have to go through. They can't compete with schools like USC and UCLA in recruiting (most players from Southern California on the Cal roster were either spurned by USC and UCLA, or they thought they had no shot of playing), many great players from that area, even within maybe 30 minutes of Berkeley, choose different schools, (Dennis Dixon, Maurice Drew and that great 2004 De La Salle class, just to name a few) and their facilities are a joke. Their stadium could collapse at any moment, and from what I hear their locker rooms and weight rooms are worse than the average high schools. Add to that how rigorous and hard getting a Berkeley education is (student-athletes have lower standards than the average student but still it's Berkeley), and it's kind of surprising how they even can be successful.
