An NBA source said the consensus among the league's referees is that the player and coach who use the most choice words during games are Boston's Kevin Garnett and Utah's Jerry Sloan. The source also said the referees take into account that it's just part of their intense makeup and they have learned not to take it personally.

In response to the report Kevin Garnett replied; *%& them, they should be lucky to have a God %#$* job in the first place. Jerry Sloan blamed his profanity on an enlarged prostate. "It's the size of a *&%^ing raquetball I tell you."

KG is the most intense and competitive bball player in the world right now. if you have a problem with what he says them dont watch the games idiot. also let me ask you this, do people listen to your conversations all the time in work or with a wife? no. bball is what kg does for a job and if you have a problem twith what he says then $%@& #%@!

garnett4life: Actually if you get too loud at work and start cursing, yes, people will listen to your conversation.

Your comment made no sense. You sound bitter. Need to calm down and stop **** KG's Popsicle.

exactly eightwonda. intensity doesnt mean you gotta yell Motherfcuker after everything that happens, dude's an ape simple as that. and like all the good players he gets calls that dont exist, but he is the most annoying because he beats his chest and screams like an idiot every 5 seconds

Name me ONE player in the NBA who doesnt get **** calls. Its the nature of that sport, which relies way too much on refs determining the outcome of games based on contact fouls. There is contact on each possession. Therefore some sort of foul should be called each time.

I also think you might want to watch a few games played by Kobe. How many **** calls does Kobe get when he throws the elbow, he jumps into the defender, etc...

A little perspective...
In KG's case, it's important to keep in mind that the issue here is LANGUAGE, not BEHAVIOR.
Garnett is generally one of the best-mannered guys in the league. However, his vocabulary is limited. He did not attend college, opting to join the NBA right after high school.
He is somewhat rough around the edges, and perhaps he should attend "finishing school" or actually attend some college classes in order to polish his verbal image.
On a more general note, both KG and Sloan are very intense people, and they take their jobs seriously, hence the penchant to curse. Of course, they do not mean their words to be taken personally. However, when you have a guy like Sloan, who makes it a point not to take any trash from his players at practice, that habit is going to carry over to the games.

KG and not 'Sheed?

October 5, 2008  01:59 PM ET

I can understand Sloan's cursing . Small market teams get shafted by the ref's all the time. Sloan wants to win and won't back down to a ref trying to take his chances away. Losing is hard enough without the unfair advantage some teams and players are given. KG is a well mannered and likeable person until he hits the floor. Then his competitiveness comes out. I'd take a foul mouthed player or coach who has that winning spirit any time. It doesn't have anything to do with intelligence, just raw emotion and desire. They are winners.

So the profanity is not natural to Artest or Rasheed Wallace? Seems everytime they open their mouths, a tech is called. I don't see how it is different than what KG does and obviously, he gets away with it. Seems like a strong double standard.

Don't get me wrong, I don't condone profanity as it relates to basketball/refs, but isn't there a big to do about refs and their biases in the news? This would seem to go right along those lines.

KG gets called for a foul and says "^$@! that!" But it's okay because it's KG and that is natural for him. He's just intense.

Sheed gets called on the next possesion and says "^$@! that!" He gets a tech for being an out of control idiot. ****?

i can't stand to watch kg. great baller, but my god this guy is supposed to be a roll model with his superstar status, but every time the camera pans to him, he's blurting out profanity. for the most part coaches take the brunt of losses and players take credit for wins, and not a lot of kids look up to sloan like they do kg, so if he wants to let the refs have it....totally agree with you sunswin, think there is a double standard between kg and the rest of the "bad images" in the league

October 5, 2008  04:38 PM ET

Most NBA players are just not very mature > last year, sooo many players were just whining like cry babies after every ref' call (even after an obvious foul).

They should be forbidden from cursing, but it's too much in their nature and it's not neccessarily ill-intentioned so the NBA can't do anything about it.

I just wish their parents did, but it's too late now.
