The Yankees have penciled in Joba Chamberlain and Chien-Ming Wang as their top two starters. They hope Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina come back and then hope to add another superstar arm. Looking into free agency, they'll have their choice of CC Sabathia, Ben Sheets, Ryan Dempster, or Derek Lowe.

Ben Sheets has been injured so often he can't even qualify for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, as far as Dempster, you only have to look at his performance when he started game 1 for the Cubs. He had the fans behind home plate ducking and holding their kids!

Yankees need CC to stay competitive next year.

Who hopes Pettite will come back?? And Hank, (^^) you are wrong! We were competitive THIS year. Lowe in Pettite's slot will improve our pitching and make us MORE competitive.

If the Yankees want to spend tens of million dollars on another player, it should be Manny, not CC. Manny is a clutch hitter in the regular season and the playoffs, whereas CC just pitches great in the regular season. Plus, Manny will take an extra measure of inspiration when playing the Red Sox 19 times a year. You just can't put a dollar value on that. Manny and Burnett would be a great way to improve things. Manny, Burnett and Lowe would be even better, but Jesus Christ, do we really need to spend money like the Red Sox???

I just cannot for the life of me envision Derek Lower in a Yankees uniform. The again, Jesus became Judas and left Boston for the Bronx...

and while you're at it, bring back Mr. Torre......

October 5, 2008  12:22 PM ET

Does this mean Sidney Ponson is not returning to the rotation?

Does CC hitting 260 innings this year scare anyone but me?

If the Yankees got the Big Unit and Clemens they can get Manny. I would prefer they didn't but I didn't want Giambi, A Rod, Sheffield, Kevin Brown, Clemens or Johnson so it's probably a given they'll get him.

This from Mike Lupica's column this Sunday in the NYDN, (a conclusion that some of us on these threads have already come to.)

"There will never be any big announcement about this, no puff of smoke coming out of Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, but it is Hal who is running the Yankees now.
You'll know Hank is around, of course, like some annoying uncle, but that won't be until he gets his cell phone privileges back.
Speaking of which: In Hank's case, you start to think unlimited minutes isn't the best idea in the whole world."

and from a past column:

"You don't know about the Steinbrenner brothers, only one of whom had the grace to show up for the last night of Yankee Stadium (the finale). The younger one, Hal, tries to learn the ropes and actually show up at the ballpark, to work with Cashman, a general manager he wants back (and is now back). The other brother, Hank, is as desperate to be somebody, to be loud and make people notice him, as his father was when he first hit town 35 years ago, occasionally treated like half-a-genius instead of some yahoo in the bleachers because he returns phone calls, as if making headlines is all that matters around here."

I post these comments because once upon a time i actually tried to defend Hank the Loud as having more intelligence and ability then his bombast showed. I believe i was wrong. I believe Hal is taking the reins and that he should take the reins of the Yankees' franchise.

Hopefully, with Hal the Younger in charge of the money, and a willingness to listen and learn to and from real baseball people, he and Cashman can rebuild the Yankees into the Yankees, that not so long ago, won those WS titles with that minney dynasty in the 90's. Sorry, but i am greedy and I like rooting for a damn good winner: i just want to revisit those types of teams I rooted for in the fifties and early sixties. Team playand pieces that were interchangable and always seemed to just win.

now this is a dynasty:
from 1949 to 1954 the Yankess won all five world series! Then in 1955 they lost for the only time to the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World series and followed that up with three more straight appearances in the World Series winning two of them. Unfortunatley there was that fiasco in Pittsburgh in 1960 followed by four more straight appearances in the World Series where they won two and lost two.
Now that's what i am talking about. that is a dynasty!
The came the cold barren years of CBS...sniff, sniff, sniffffffle.........
