Red Sox covet Padres' Peavy

If Jake Peavy does indeed become trade bait in San Diego, watch the line form out the door for his services. Peavy, 27, is precisely the type of pitcher the Red Sox covet. And considering the close relationship between GMs Theo Epstein and Kevin Towers, don't rule out the Sox. The Padres would want a Dan Haren-type deal, and the Sox have the chips to do it.

Thats a scary thought, Peavy with the RSox.

Unless they convert Peavy into a reliever, those chips could be used elsewhere

True, and besides. Why give up farm prospects when you can get CC Sabathia?

That's a great point vtek. And as a Padres fan along with Boston, we all sure hope good buddys Theo and Kevin see it that way too, right?

"is precisely the type of pitcher the Red Sox covet"

Implying that many teams would not want Peavy???

Perhaps other teams covet Jeff Suppan or Livan Hernandez?

How many Cy youngs do those two stiffs have?
I'd love to see the Sox go hard after Peavey. The dude is awesome on a bad team.
Beckett, Lester, Matsuzaka, Peavey, Byrd or Wakefield. Not too shabby!

King Yaz, it seems I may have missed the sarcasm in your post. If your implying that every other team will try to acquire Peavey, I agree.

Because Sabathia is a fat pig who will show up to spring training for whoever is foolish enough to give him the big contract weighing about 400 lbs.

I know he's entering what should be the prime of his career but that delivery has "reconstructive shoulder surgery" all over it. He puts too much tourque on his arm and shoulder and doesn't use his legs enough. He's a great competitor and a great guy period so I hope I'm wrong but.......

October 5, 2008  01:39 PM ET

Just putting it out there that I think the team most likely to go after him is Atlanta. He grew up in Alabama and his family still lives there, and he was a big Braves fan. My comment may seem out there, but how many people thought we'd get Tim Hudson?

By the way I hope Huddy has a good rehab coming back from TJ.

first:
Peavy has a no-trade clause.

second:
Peavy doesn't want to leave the National League, he said so in this article:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20081001/news_1s1padres.html

third:
That'll cost an awful amount of prospects for any team to land Peavy. Only the Yankees of the early 2000s would do that kind of deal.

fourth:
Red Sox aren't going to get either CC Sabathia or Jake Peavy.

fifth:
CC Sabathia is the same kind of pitcher as David Wells, and he didn't have much injury trouble now did he?

October 5, 2008  04:24 PM ET

I doubt Boston will land either Sabathia or Peavy. Of the two, I think Peavy is the better fit in Boston. Sabathia seems to disappear in October because I don't think he can pitch well on short rest. October requires it. Could Peavy do it? Maybe, but how often has he been in a long series.

Actually, I see Todd Helton in the Red Sox uniform next year if Mike Lowell's hip remains a question mark. Helton at first and Youkillis goes back to third. Considering Colorado needs to try to keep Matt Holliday and needs money to do it, I bet they would almost give Helton away if someone took the contract.

With all the celebrating the Red Sox do Peavy will constantly be on the DL with broken ribs.

except A-rod
except Jose Contreras

October 5, 2008  06:34 PM ET

Theo better take a look at the market first before getting peavy, they need a starter but not sacrifice their young prospect or maybe trade some of the older guys in the team...

October 5, 2008  06:36 PM ET

Boston's pitching is pretty solid as it is... no need to trade away a load of minor league talent for him.

October 5, 2008  06:46 PM ET

does boston really need a starter? You were without schilling for an entire year and still managed to make the playoffs. I think Boston will manage without making any free agent signings.

Yankees really need atleast 1 starter. If they get CC sabathia and/or AJ Burnett, they will easily have the best rotation in baseball
