Inside Wisconsin band probe
University of Wisconsin officials interviewed members of the university Marching Band one at a time Saturday as part of their investigation into "serious hazing allegations," officials said. Staffers in the UW-Madison dean of students' office began meeting Friday night with the 300-plus members of the band, and the interviews continued Saturday, UW-Madison spokeswoman Amy Toburen said. Officials announced Friday that the entire band was suspended after Band Director Mike Leckrone received a tip with allegations of hazing. He would say only that the charges involved alcohol consumption and "inappropriate sexual behavior." Several band members interviewed Saturday said they did not know what the allegations were about. The suspension meant the renowned band did not perform Saturday night in the Big Ten football matchup between the Badgers and the Ohio State Buckeyes at Camp Randall Stadium -- the first time the band has been barred from performing in a game in at least 40 years. To compensate for the band's absence at halftime, the UW athletic department used the scoreboard and sound system for a package that included music and college football highlights. The department had considered several options for a halftime show, including asking the UW Alumni Band to perform, but department staff threw out that plan.

I was really hoping for a Oompa band! I think it would have been great if they passed out kazoo's to everyone, that always gets the crowd fired up!

I think the absence of the Wisconsin Marching Band was the difference maker in the Ohio State victory over Wisconsin.

I heard all the freshmen tuba players had to perform a Colombian style "Tallahassee Shuffle" (where you hide the cucumber).

I don't think it matters how good the band is, most fans would rather have real music and highlights during halftime

buckeyedude to say that the marching band made the difference in the game is ludicrous. If you cant get up to play Ohio St the band sure as hell isnt gonna help you. Any coach would tell you if they need a band to help them win theres a major problem there. What won and lost the game was simply they had no answer for Beanie Wells

I am sure Buckeyedude was being facetious in his comments. Someone told me that this all stemmed from the bus ride back from Michigan where girls were forced to make out with each other to use the bathroom and also told that they must do pole dances... Sounds like they got suspnded for being in college

The Wisconsin band has been banned from numerous stadiums in the Big Ten because they are obnoxius, rude, violent, and all-around a bunch of thugs. Their band director should be fired, and the band should take their stupid "5th quarter" and go away for good.

Let's be Honest out of the 50-106 thousand people that fill college football stadiums every sat. how many people actually come to see the BAND play a 15 minute halftime show, 600-1000 people all MOMMIES AND DADDIES of the band members. Has anyone noticed how mant trainers the band has, some of them have more than the football team. the band is just a bunch of fat/ugly kids who can run or play a sport.

F%#@ you, ftball, SLC Nole, and Roll Tide. As a lifelong football fan AND as a musician (and as a marching band director) your stereotyped view of band members pisses me off.
People absolutely go to a football game for the game, first and foremost. But don't knock the tradition of a marching band, and the fact that many people appreciate the atmosphere it adds to the game. Sure, not everyone likes a marching band, but so what? Don't watch if you don't care. It's too bad Wisconsin's band is ruining the image of a great tradition.
Not all "band" people are fat and unathletic. I'm the "ultimate" band geek...I'm a director. But I hike, kayak, fish, golf, run, etc. so quit with the stereotypes. I'd be willing to bet I'm far healthier and more active than at least half of my old high school classmates who were on the football team!
