Sources: Mexico tried to flip Torres

If you think that Jose Francisco Torres' decision to play for the U.S. national team instead of Mexico didn't have an impact south of the border, think again. Not only did the Mexican national team actively recruit Torres at the same time as the United States, Mexico also attempted to convince Torres to change his mind even after Torres was named to the U.S. national team's 23-man roster for its upcoming World Cup qualifier against Cuba. Sources with knowledge of the approaches told SBI that Mexican officials lobbied hard for Torres, before and after his decision was made, but Torres stuck by his original decision to play for the United States, his country of birth. The Texas-born Torres will become officially cap-tied to the United States if he appears in either of the U.S. team's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Cuba and Trinidad & Tobago.

The Mexican Federation can see his value, they watch him play all the time. At this point it's almost a competition to see who can get him on the field in the 89th minute to commit him to their side for life. If Mexico can get him just one cap then they haven't just added a player, they've taken a potential option away from the US. Let's see how smart Bob Bradley is in the next two qualifiers against minnow teams with his fielding. A strategic coach plays him as a sub one time. A tactical coach plays the best players only. But he also left Johnsonon the roster for way too long... so we'll see.

The US has basically clinched their spot in the next round of qualifiers. Get young kids like Torres some action and see what they can do for the future.

Bradley's choices lately have baffled me, but I would be shocked if he doesn't give this kid some solid time just on the fact he showed some real character by sticking to his word about playing for the US. To me, that counts for something in a world where our world class striker plays for Italy and our world class defender will soon have a German passport.

So much for Mexican fans claiming that their Nats team didn't want Torres.

October 6, 2008  10:30 AM ET

Here I be " homies"! And this be my 2 cents of the day. All I have to say is that I am extremetly Psych'ed about the fact that this Kid decided to play for AMERICA he is a tremendous prospect and will add a different dimension to our creative side, he has a wicked outside shot and I will go bananas if he scores against Mejico in future matches. I am glad he did not let the FMF influence his decision. I wish Padilla would have made the same decision but oh well, I think we definetely got us a good players. Again he should change his name to Joe Francis Torres and the deal will be all but sealed - you dig!
Again, like my amigo Temistocle from La Salvador told me , central americans is catching to mejico.

October 6, 2008  10:35 AM ET

And.... to me is funny when mejicos talk about USA recruting mejicans players when it should be the other way around this kid was born on USA soil which last I read makes him an American, so therefore it is mejico stealing precious resources from Uncle Sam. I have spoken.
Let me go back to baking my momma's famous pie!

October 6, 2008  10:58 AM ET

At least he is an American by birth and not like Franco, Leandra, Castillo, Sinah, Vuoso, Dos Santos, Jimenez, Pascual, I forgot the other 2 naturalized players the mejican teams uses often in the lineup.

October 6, 2008  11:11 AM ET

Nery was born in san luis potoisi, and dos santos in monterry nuevo leon. so they were born in mexico. i'm glad to see the kid make a choice and stick to it. good catch by the U.S. i is the woman enough with the mexican bashing. 90% of your team was born to immigrants so shut ur trap and support your team.

I'll back "I is the man" here. Why wouldnt he choose the US? He chose the best team in CONCACAF and saw the potential. Hopefully Bradley cap ties him this weekend and we wont have to worry about it any longer.

He didn't choose the best team, he just chose the team where he was more possibilities of playing. Cause trust me Torres at Mexico would of only been a backup to Guardado.

Also, I think the MNF tried to get Torres, not because he's that great, but because they don't want him to help the U.S. Mexico actually doesn't need him because their stacked with left wingers, which U.S isn't. Now if he was a right winger, where Mexico has only Arce then Torres would of been called immidiately, but he just plays the position that Mexico is loaded on.

October 6, 2008  01:59 PM ET

ramirez- its called deepening your player pool... mexico clearly didnt like him as a prospect at strengthening an already deep position... between injuries and club duties, that left mid position can be quite tiring.... trust me as a yank i know :-/...... if mexico thought anything of the kid they wouldve given him a chance regardless just to deepen their pool.... now they are trying to call him up merely to prevent the US from capping him, not b/c they want him.... and Torres recognizes it...

Trust me Mexico doesn't need Torres. The game against Chile, when Torres decided to play for U.S because he didn't get called was a game in which some other young guy played left wing and actually played very well and was one of the best in the field. So Mexico is very deep there and yeah Mexico just called Torres from preventing him from going to the U.S. Hope he plays well and is actually called every time U.S plays.

First part of this is completed...Torres wants to play for the US, and the USMNT has called him to the squad. NOW...Coach Bradley needs to get him on the field. If that doesn't happen - he can always end up changing his mind...get him cap tied so he can't slip away.

If the U.S won't use him, then what's the point of getting him. It's not like Mexico needs him or will use him for important games.

this really isnt that big a deal it's not like landon donnovan or carlos vela at best he'll be a back up to a back up. you should be more worried about subotic chosing you and not germany as he really is an impact player the us needs.
