Rodgers convinced Pack he could play

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers convinced coach Mike McCarthy during an 8:45 a.m. workout Sunday in the Don Hutson Center that he could make all the throws necessary to start for the Green Bay Packers. Rodgers hadn't practiced at all and after attempting to throw Friday was almost certain he wouldn't be ready by Sunday. But he came in for treatment three times on Saturday, fitted himself with a protective brace and then fought through the pain to keep his modest five-game starting streak going. In his pregame workout in front of McCarthy, Rodgers showed he could make all the required throws and then looked his coach in the eye and told him he wanted to play. According to Rodgers, he was told his shoulder was not at any risk for further damage so it was strictly a performance issue. McCarthy was satisfied with what he got from Rodgers.

Rodgers must have watched all those ESPN slides showing Favre's Iron man streak against Rodgers measly 4 game starting streak.

Easy there my feathery friend....nothing in Hanks comment deserved a quack attack like that.

I feel bad for the guy. He has such a legacy to live up to with ZERO time to adjust. He was thrown into a huge mess and the entire world of packer nation is counting on him. If he took over this team in a "normal circumstance" he wouldn't be front and center on everyone's radar and games like this would be considered learning curves and adjustment time.

I'm not a Packer fan at all, but I'm kinda a Rodgers fan. I find myself pulling for the guy when the other team isn't the Cowboys. Keep your head up Aaron, hang in there

Yep..no cheese love for him for a week.

That is a good team -- the only thing that needs to be fixed is the 97 yards in penalties ... A Rod is a good QB, but they need to stop giving the other team yards through stupic stuff.

October 6, 2008  11:57 AM ET

Rodgers played fine. Too bad he couldn't play on Defense, that's where the Packers needed help.

October 6, 2008  12:18 PM ET

Rodgers really manned up yesterday. Toward the end, his right arm was just dangling as he came off the field - god, I cringed just watching him. He must've been in a lot pain but he toughed it out and, except for one pick and one intentional grounding, he played very well (3 TDs). The OL didn't give him much help...Abraham was in his lap all day long. I was no big fan of Rodgers before the season started but he has shown me a lot this season so far. He's no wimp and has a great arm. Props to him. Hope he can get well and keep tossing the rock.

This will be a long season, the Packers have one of the youngest teams in the NFL and it really shows on the offensive line. The defense is actually pretty good, but is asked to do too much at times. Rodgers is a good QB, one can tell just by watching him. He is good in the pocket and isn't prone to make too many forced errors.

October 6, 2008  12:40 PM ET

I don't think there is another QB in the NFL today that is as motivated as Rodgers is...and he shows it every game.

October 6, 2008  12:49 PM ET

Rodgers is playing very well this year so far. He's only had one real bad game and has a QB rating of over 95.

October 6, 2008  12:55 PM ET

Rodgers needs to be thinking long term. What good is he if he doesn't give that shoulder time to heal? Starting an Iron Man streak is meaningless if you can't follow through from one game to the next.

I don't think it has anything to do w/ BF's streak...Aaron has said that it isn't about measuring up to Favre, but he just wants to compete and I believe him.

He played very well and his O-line did a better job blocking him compared to the last 2 weeks, but Rodgers is under so much pressure. One of his shortcomings is holding onto the ball too long.

The O-line has no real consistency yet due to injuries, though I'm perplexed why they can't figure this out...the personnel are all the same as last year (minus Coston whose on IR and Barbre as an addition, along w/ the rookies) and last year's bunch only gave up 19 sacks on the year (one of the best in the league). Probably a portion of the lack of consistency together this season and A-Rodge holding onto it too long.

October 6, 2008  01:41 PM ET

Oh and part of the reason the pass block was much better this week is that we actually RAN the ball (somewhat) this week.

QUOTE(#19):

Did you see the game? The Packers defense was horrific. They gave up 27 points. The offense scored 24, which will win most games in which large chunks of yards aren't being granted to the other team. I do agree that the Packers offensive line has holes.

No, actually I didn't get the game because it's blocked out in my area for the Bears game. I should have said the defense is better than last year but it is porous at times to say the least. But, they are still young.
