Marbury sees himself starting

So proud of his off-season conditioning program, Stephon Marbury is producing a 45-minute fitness video due out for the Christmas shopping season. The question for Mike D'Antoni isn't whether Marbury has rebuilt himself into a superstar. It's whether Marbury has rebuilt himself into the starting point-guard role he's held his whole career. All indications during Camp Saratoga was D'Antoni desperately wants his new pickup, Chris Duhon, to start at point guard and envisions Marbury as sixth man, playing more wing. When the 197-pound Marbury was asked about his competition with Duhon, Marbury predicted he'll be in the starting five opening night Oct. 29 at the Garden against Miami. "You can't assess it yet," Marbury told The Post. "When the 29th comes, when the lights come on, it will be different. It doesn't matter now who is on the court at what position. I know when that the game starts, I'll have the ball or I'll be receiving the ball to make plays for others and myself." Because D'Antoni has a high-school crush on Duhon, Marbury's prediction may turn inaccurate. Most league scouts regard Duhon as a very good backup point guard, not a starter. But a source said when D'Antoni watched tape of Marbury's 24 games last season, he felt the club ran the ball more fluidly when Marbury was on the bench and Nate Robinson was in. The knock on Marbury is he dribbles too much and doesn't make enough vertical passes to make the high-tempo hum.

Either starting Marbury or Duhon, the knicks are lack of depth in the PG position. D'Antoni didn't even need to watch those 24 games. Marbury was a well-known ballhog before those 24 games.

This is CLASSIC Marbury-
me, me, me, me...........

The answer should be -
"I'll do whatever coach thinks is best for the team"

But we get-"I know when that the game starts, I'll have the ball or I'll be receiving the ball"

I hope he starts for the Palermo Linguini this year. They'll just love it when he takes 46 shots a game a misses 30 of them.

October 6, 2008  09:18 AM ET

Marbury should be playing the 2 guard anyway, that part of the article I agree with.

If D'Antoni wants to make an impact he should start Duhon. Go with your guy and make a statement.

Starbury can still ball his attitude however needs a shape up!

October 6, 2008  09:33 AM ET

j.hova you dont realise how bad a coach one trick tony is
the suns rotation stunk to high heaven (to many minutes for to few and no replacements to the rotation when an injury occured) and suffered burnout come playoffs every year
at least the knicks wont have to worry about that

October 6, 2008  09:43 AM ET

If Marbury starts on your team then your team is destined for last place. This guy is dillusional if he thinks he still matters.

October 6, 2008  09:44 AM ET

Marbury is in a different world... his starting days are over...

October 6, 2008  09:51 AM ET

Knicks are ****** no matter what they do. Can't start him. Bench him and he'll polute everything...imagine him and Randolph coming off the pine??!!!! I'll bet you the rest of the NY secondary would rather be in Afghanistan.

Even if Marbury has worked himself into Terrel Owens kinda shape, he's still a knucklehead.

This is a very sad, typically Starbury statement. He will not be the starter in D'Antoni's line-up.

He's a gonner come February.

I have watched Duhon in college and the pro's. Marbury should be off the team because he is cancer, not available. Skills only, Duhon is not better then Marbury, Nate, Crawford at PG position and may not be much better then Collens.

I have grave concerns about Danilo. 19 and back problems is not a good thing. I also hope the Knicks pickup a big from somewhere. I would have drafted Randolph from LSU.

As a fan, even if your team is lacking, you what hope, no matter how questionable. This is a year where guys are missing training and we are lite in the paint. We don't have the offense to out score anyone. I don't see a defensive change. I see the eastern teams getting stronger.

Bottomline, I have grave concerns. let's see what Mike can do. It is not fair to Judge yet.

October 6, 2008  10:16 AM ET

What a deuchebag!! me me me me all the time. Someone kick his knees or ankle so he can't run again!! jeez this is ridiculous.

October 6, 2008  11:14 AM ET

Duhon will be starting for the Knicks. There is no way around it. Marbury can pop off all he wants to - he's not a fast break oriented PG and never will be. Duhon is a career backup, but is a far better floor general.

October 6, 2008  11:20 AM ET

Duhon couldn't even start on the bulls-
He AT BEST is a below average NBA point guard
- only thing he can do is defend reasonably well

Bottom line for the Knicks is this and next season is about
finding a handful of people we can keep- that show DESIRE
to play & get better.
The only way out of our mess is to WAIT & HOPE we can sign
a top level free-agent in the future or get REMARKABLY
lucky in the draft- a pathetic way to be- but that's the truth

October 6, 2008  11:57 AM ET

Well they could do worse

October 6, 2008  12:25 PM ET

I wish he'd see himself starting in Siberia or something.

Good points Winkstrap. I actually do not like the idea of the 9 man rotation but like you said at least the Knicks do not have to worry about the playoffs. They ain't making it.

October 6, 2008  12:32 PM ET

12 underwhelming years into his NBA career, and this guy is still arrogance personified.

October 6, 2008  12:37 PM ET

I see him starting too........

.........starting to pack his locker.

October 6, 2008  12:44 PM ET

I agree with Stephen Marbury about deserving to be a starter for the New York Knicks beginning with their home opening game against the Miami Heat on October 29th. The only difference is Marbury believes he should be the Knicks starting point guard while I think Marbury would help the Knicks most if he started and remained on their inactive list until his contract expires next April.
