Schiano: I overestimated Rutgers talent

For the first time this season, Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano took a long, hard look at his 1-4 team. And he was very candid about what he saw. "Probably, maybe I overestimated a little bit," Schiano said of the current team's talent level, compared to those of seasons past. "Probably we haven't played at some veteran positions as well as we're capable of. ``And probably we haven't coached as well as we've needed to. So when you add those three things up -- maybe one area on one day and one area on another play -- the result is where we are."

Or Rutgers overestimated you as a coach. Sounds more and more like a one hit wonder to me.

October 6, 2008  08:26 AM ET

Just say it coach, "we suck"

October 6, 2008  08:50 AM ET

As did Rutgers with your salary

Ha!! LOSER!!

October 6, 2008  12:16 PM ET

All the rumors about him eventually taking over Penn State when JoePa retires sure have subdsided lately.

October 6, 2008  12:26 PM ET

you think he's kicking himself for not taking that Michigan job?

October 6, 2008  12:32 PM ET

mobywv, I know you are mad he didnt take the Michigan job....you would still have Rich Rod, not the overpaid in over his head Bill Stewart.

October 6, 2008  12:48 PM ET

Don't write him off just yet. After coming off of 3 straight bowl seasons, and only the 2nd, 3rd and 4th bowl games in school history, he should get a little slack. While he may have underestimated the team, I'm interested in how he corrects things by next year. If they are still a subpar team in 2009, then you have an argument, but see how effectively he reacts first.

October 6, 2008  02:17 PM ET

How many starters did he loose from last year? I really have not followed Rutgers very closely (knowing team personnel), so I am curious; I've been too busy getting pissed at USC choking against OSU, Stanford & UCLA over the last 3 seasons.

October 6, 2008  02:35 PM ET

My queston is what does he think he is doing to make comments like this to the press. Not the best way to motivate your team. Sounds to me like a coaching issue.

October 6, 2008  04:06 PM ET

Rutgers is a joke and thats the bottom line. People are falling off the Rutgers band wagon like it's the titanc. I have lived in Jersey my whole life and I'm sick and tired of people backing Rutgers football. These clowns jumped on the band wagon when they realized had a football team. I'm sure some students had no clue Rutgers had a football team till they started winning. That was a waste of state money building that stadium.

October 6, 2008  04:25 PM ET

NDRUSS you sound exactly like a bandwagoner who is deciding to get off the bus now. I've been a rutgers fan for years, and true fans stick with their teams even when they suck. And yes I have been through the 1-11 years when the offense was predicatble because it was run run pass punt. So yea get off the wagon you're the kind of fan us true fans don't want anyways.

Schiano took a program that was worse than probably some of the top high school teams in jersey and made it a team that has a chance of contending with big name schools. I for one am still excited, does not mean i'm not frustrated or disappointed in this years showing, but I will stick with them and hope they turn it around for 2009.

nah, we're still here and still think he's a damn good coach. Keeping Rutgers on the map is no small feat year in and year out. As far as the PSU job, it's Tom Bradley's to lose or I should say if he wants it.

October 6, 2008  07:30 PM ET

I would not blame Schiano for all of RU's woes. For one thing, if Kordell Young was healthy, you would see an offense thrive at RU. But without him there is no running game, and as result you have a one-dimensional offense where Britt is covered heavily every play and linebackers sit and wait for the pass. One coach I would blame at Rutgers is the Offensive coordinator. Bill Stewart - now there's an awful coach - basically handed Rutgers that game the other day in the fourth quarter electing not to punt, but RU's confused, uninspired offense screwed it up.
By the way Rutgers fans/bandwagon jumpers. College football is not like MLB. Take off your New York Yankee tinted glasses and understand it takes time to build a program. I'm not a Rutgers fan, just sick and tired of ignorant people in New Jersey who think they are.

October 6, 2008  08:28 PM ET

Excellent motivational technique there, Coach Stupid.

Is it OK to stop pretending that Rutgers is a top tier football program yet?

October 6, 2008  08:48 PM ET

The amount of work, time, commitment, and good luck it takes to turn around a Rutgers, or a Duke, or a Vanderbilt is incredible. It doesn't always occur in a straight line shooting upwards. I have no doubt that Rutgers' team and fans are disappointed by this season's results thus far. But Schiano has brought them far. There's simply some slippage this year. I believe he has the intellegence and work ethic to get them back up again.

October 6, 2008  09:24 PM ET

They can still go to the weedeater bowl if they win all their games! GO RUTGERS!

October 6, 2008  11:17 PM ET

Build the stadium and watch the talent come.Better facilities = better team.

October 6, 2008  11:24 PM ET

Build your new addition to your stadium, build top notch facilities and the talent will come, maybe.!!!
