Soriano blames Cubs makeup for flop

And who is the Cubs' postseason goat? Should it be divided equally among the players and the manager, the chairman and the Greek priest, or should $137 million outfielder Alfonso Soriano be acknowledged for his 1-for-14 performance? Soriano is likely to hear about it the most over the off-season. "Yeah, it's tough," he said. "We tried, but it just didn't happen. We played all year like a very good team and we expected a little bit more, but it didn't happen." While he didn't pass the buck, Soriano said he believes the Cubs were built for a marathon, not a sprint. "We're a very good team for [162] games, but we don't do nothing after that," he said. "That's the difference. We're not put together for [a short series]."

good point Al. That's baseball, there's always next year.

October 6, 2008  08:34 AM ET

Soriano choked with the Yankees in the post season. He is what his record says he is in post season play.

October 6, 2008  08:45 AM ET

Potlicker is getting what $137 million? Blame should fall squarely on him.

October 6, 2008  09:12 AM ET

it should fall on him but you also have to admit.....

Geo was in a horrendous slump there at the time...

derrek lee...where the **** has he disappeared to??....i mean isnt he the one that upset the cubs in 2003 with the marlins and won the championship...and now he looks like his career is done cause he isnt hitting ANYTHING....

soriano keep swinging at the lowest pitches EVER...

aramis lost his clutch touch...

fukudome was the hugest mistake ever....i dont even know whats up with him....we go after fukudome but we miss out on matsuzaka? i mean cmon people....we could have bought matsuzaka and still picked up rich harden this year and then there would be no talk of jason marquis...

just one **** up year people...one really **** up year

That's one young feller I'm glad the Yankees got rid of ...

October 6, 2008  09:17 AM ET

The AROD for Soriano trade might end up being a record for the most money 2 guys involved in a trade got in their careers as well as the worst combined playoff batting average.

"IT'S GONNA HAPPEN"

Yes, if you are referring to the Cubs urinating all over themselves?

October 6, 2008  09:41 AM ET

The Cubs are cursed and they deserve to be. How do you like that, Commissioner? That is karma payback for moving that Astros series to stinking Milwaukee.

October 6, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Milwaukee does NOT stink, they purchased some Glade candels....

October 6, 2008  09:49 AM ET

"derrek lee...where the **** has he disappeared to??...."
uh, dude, he only batted like .545 in this series.

Soriano should take some blame, but so should Lou for continually batting Soriano 1st. The guy with the lowest OBP, most home runs and highest Slugging shouldn't be your leadoff guy.
Lineup should look like
1 - Theriot SS
2 - Fontenot 2B
3 - Lee 1b
4 - Ramirez 3b
5 - Soriano LF
6 - Soto - C
7 - Derosa - RF
8 - Edmonds/Johnson CF

Honestly, this linuep is so good, the 2,6,7, and 8 spots could be swapped out in any way between those 4(5) guys and I wouldn't complain.

Also, one more request for Lou since I'm sure he'll be reading this:
Next year, START ZAMBRANO FIRST AND DON"T PULL HIM AFTER SIX FREAKING INNINGS BECAUSE YOU ARE WORRIED THAT YOU MIGHT NEED HIM LATER IN THE SERIES

October 6, 2008  09:50 AM ET

Soriano should go sit and look in a mirror before pointing any fingers or assessing the "make-up" of this team. Perhaps if a certain left fielder who is making $137 million didn't go 1-14 then that would help the "make-up" It made me physically sick to watch that collapse last week and to now hear our "franchise player" come out and blame the "make-up" of the team. How about this next season, make up your mind if you want to go out and win a World Series or if you want to just fold up the minute the post-season starts.

Its not a curse, get over your stupid reasons, they played like crap when it mattered most...curses are a lame excuse and just dont exist!

Yeah, he is exciting but his plate discipline has always been poor, especially in the playoffs...

October 6, 2008  10:26 AM ET

I think Ozzie Guillen said it correctly "**** the Cubs" Just because they are in a big market, and baseball novices kiss their ****, doesn't mean they deserve anything. What a bunch of losers with no leadership.

October 6, 2008  10:33 AM ET

There's someone to listen to......good grief

October 6, 2008  10:44 AM ET

After the Cubs, Brewers and Selig conspired to force the ASTROS to play the day after Hurricane Ike, there is nothing that makes me happier then seeing the Cubs and Brewers get there butts spanked! Karma is an evil b *tch!
