Bettman downplays Euro expansion

Not long after an NHL owner predicted Sunday that European expansion is "happening," league commissioner Gary Bettman spoke in non-committal terms on the subject. "It's not on the drawing board," Bettman said before attending the final of four regular-season games played in Europe over the weekend.

The picture says it all. You boys thought I watered down the league before watch what I'm going to do now. Can you say trust me?

European expansion is an awful idea. I just cant see the money being that good to even want to try this.

His apparent happiness disturbs me.

I can't believe that I'm even sayiong this, but could it be that The Little Corporal has actually realised and recognised what a stupid idea looks like?
Maybe he's reading T&R?
I can however, believe I'm wting this:

BETTMAN STILL S***S

October 6, 2008  10:01 AM ET

So unnecessary expansion nearly killed the league...bettman's solution? MORE EXPANSION!!!1one!

The man is pathetic. I can't believe how a man with such a poor job performance record can remain employed.

That's because they cut the Brian Burke half of the picture out

October 6, 2008  11:28 AM ET

Yes, that's just what the NHL needs, more expansion. Especially to a place (Europe) that will need large amounts of money for the flights. I mean what would they do, have the NHL and then a EHL and then have the different league winners duke it out for the Stanley Cup?

October 6, 2008  11:29 AM ET

Expansion is easy money for the league and they don't have to cut in the players. 3 bankrupt teams (and possible another if not two more soon) under his watch doesn't really matter as long as he can sell the owners on the millions they'll receive through expansion. If you have 300M buring a hole in your pocket, you can put a team in Siberia, no questions asked (unless you're Jim Balsille)

October 6, 2008  11:32 AM ET

This is ridiculous. It'll never work to put a team from a North American league on an entirely different continent. Somehow, I don't think that the Players Association would allow it. What if you're in the same division? Do you really want to get on a plane and fly to Europe 3 times a year, perhaps within a matter of weeks?

October 6, 2008  11:45 AM ET

Hey it's a global economy I guess. Look where it has gotten our country. The rich are getting richer and the rest of us will pay with our blood.

October 6, 2008  12:20 PM ET

He's an idiot pure and simple.

October 6, 2008  02:11 PM ET

Bettman is not an actual human.

Someone should pointy that overpaid, under acheiving moronic midget over here and we can point a few things out to him, not the least of which is:

BETTMAN S***S

Yep. It's the same face one does when taking a long awaited crapper after finsihing up that extra-spicy chili con carne and are quite amazed by the smell of it...

I'm glad to see he seems slowly to come to his senses with this Euro expansion nonsense.

BETTMAN SH**S

That picture makes me want to punch his puny little face....but then that would make me a bully, for picking on someone to small....

Here's a novel idea ... How about expand in a real hockey market like CANADA!
Bettman needs to be checked head first into the boards...

I wouldn't mind taking a double minor and a misconduct penalty for that!

The NHL is petrified of a few wealthy Russians spoiling their modest monopoly. For years the NHL had the hockey world to themselves, top dollars and top talents. Now all of sudden these European countries have wised up and aren't going to take 10 cents on the dollar for the talent they produce. They're scared that the KHL might have legs and expand in Europe. They're scared a guy like Malkin might take a few million euros (tax free) and bolt the NHL. And they're especially afraid that in the future, a kid like John Tavares (who missed this years draft by 5 days or something) might skip out on the NHL and take big money as a 17 year old in Europe. The Radulov situation could be the first of many defects. Other than protecting their monopoly, there isn't any sense in trying to create a euro division.
